Hi RayBoogie, hope all is well! Yes, it was at one of the first Heineken Jazz Festivals in Puerto Rico, when they used to do the festival at the Plaza de Arsenas in El Viejo San Juan.
I saw Paoli Mejias back in 1995 when he was with Eddie Palmieri take a bongo solo for about 10 mins.that I have never seen or heard anything like it.Mucho sabor y tremendo afinque. On that occasion Poncho was the opening act and Mongo was the featured guest in Poncho's band.Mongo and I were seating together when Paoli took the solo,Mongo being a bongocero before anything else, remarked "Con~o Dario, ese chamaco esta cabron en el bongo' ".At the time Paoli was just a young kid. Saludos, Dario
Hope all is well! Yes, Paoli Mejias is bad ass bongó player and tumbador as well. After he left EP's band, he has been working with many different Latin Jazz projects in Puerto Rico from Humberto Ramírez, Charlie Sepulveda, Ramón Vázquez, etc. and working on his own project Checkmate. He is just about to release his first solo CD, "Mi Tambor". For more information on him check out his official site:
Paoli is from Puerto Rico. He has his own website I think http://www.paolimejias.com (if not check by his band name Checkmate). (Check also LP's site, http://www.lpmusic.com. Check the endorsers or artists).
Good percussionist. In Tito Puente's last album with Eddie Palmieri, "Masterpiece" he has a conga solo in a song named "Timbal del Mundo", I think that is the name, that is pretty good). He is in the style of Giovanni and Richie Flores. Very versatile.
Met him years ago when he was starting up. Misunderstood at the beginning but has made a name by himself.
I was inspired by Roberto Roena and the Apollo sound. I also admire Angel Hernandez from La Sonora Poncena. I am a nwe member, and I love playing the bongos. I am a member of the Rutgers University Salsa Band based in New Jersey and I own three online apparel stores dedicated to the percussionist.
If you guy's are interested in seeing my online stores, here are the urls's

Choki was 14 years old when he started with Palmieri. That's what Eddie Palmieri told me, which was in 1969. Choki was the youngest member ever to be in Eddie's band. JD
