JCR Old Original 9 lugs Mahogany Bongo

Postby Timba Pa Ti » Thu Apr 03, 2008 2:10 am

Hi, here I'm posting an Interesting hybrid JCR bongo ,this is to my knowledge one of the few with this unique characteristics, also the top and bottom rims ears are welded not rivetted the macho with 5 tunning lugs and the Hembra has 4tunning lugs.I was told by MR.Cali Rivera JCR, the reason why he put 5 on the macho measurement 6 3/4" was for the high pitch needed at the time. hembra didn't need the 5lugs because the low tunning required and with a thick skin and a 9" hembra drum will sound perfect .All this came to his mind while he was Yomo Toro' s Bongocero .He also mentioned that the 8 lugs Bongo was killing him and he understood that the 10 lugs could be worst on the Traveling Bongoceros, reason why he doesn't recommend the ten lugs. Yomo's group had to many gigs thru out Europe and other countries mostly on military bases, were hispanic's soldiers and needed that home country warm moral support. Before he stop the long journey's, the played timbales clave, guiro, coro and end up as the group singer . From there he decided to go full force with his company Made of very close friends and family members. The bongo was bought from one of his close friends MR. (Chiripin), one of the great 's , Bongoceros of our beloved Puerto Rico.

Mr. Chiripin probably was Tommy Olivencia's bongocero back in the 70's.
Tommy recorded (3) Evelio tunes, if I am not mistaken during one of them
Evelio's during a bongo solo they mentioned "Chiripin" as the soloist.
Nice looking bongos by the way.

Hi ritmoboriqua, Yes you are right ,chiripin was with olivencia during the 70's ,but what I met was that he recorded more after he left the band. I dont want to post why he left .In the 80 's he was recruited by Bobby Valentin and was Bobby's copiest for the Band .Thanks for the observation. Talking about the bongo the measurements 6 3/4" and 9" Thanks Isaac, did you see the Bongo that Cali finished for me ,I haven't. Can you send me a photo ,I will pick in the summer. you have my email and phone thanks.
