Very inventive and seemingly practical. You are the first I have ever heard of using kevlar on a bongo. I really liked this homebrewed innovation.

Unless you are going to play your kevlar bongo head with sticks I would not play on it with my hands. Like you said you are using the 100% percent stuff you need to be careful, because the kevlar used for drumheads is not the same kevlar used for bullet proof stuff. Read and heed:

Kevlar- Originally used in making bullet-proof vests, Kevlar was developed as a drumhead material to combat the rough wear that drum corps were putting Mylar heads through. As it is bullet-proof, the players could not dent or tear it, and therefore it made for excellent durability. Some drumset players have used it on full kits, and some on snares, but it is generally not considered a good all purpose choice for two reasons. Due to its extreme durability and tensile strength, it has a huge amount of rebound, and if not controlled properly with correct technique, Kevlar heads can be a killer on hands. Tendonitis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are by-products of extended use. Additionally, it doesn’t have a very resonant or tonal sound, so Kevlar is usually avoided for instruments other than snare drums.

Don't kid yourself it can hurt your hands for the rest of your life.

Pretty sure the rebound comment is for sticks and marching band drummers, fingers don't really rebound that way.

Rumbero4ever wrote:Guys that stuff about rebounding too much and lack of tonal sound just doesn't cut it. I have no problem playing it and I don't even have to hit hard for it to sound good. For me it will be caso cerrado when I upload the way it sounds and then you guys can be the judge. I"m happy playing it and love the sound so I guess that's what counts for me.

Very well, carry-on.

If it were that good and not dangerus then why do Remo and Evens put warnings on there boxes? And only use in making skins for marching snares only.

Plus the one that is used for marching bands/corps is blended with other materials to make it a tad more playable. LP uses kevlar to reinforce their drums not for their heads that should tell you something. That stuff stop bullets I know it got to do some wonders for your hand bones, nerves and tendons. Just throwing caution to the wind that's all.

I would think companies like REMO, Evans, LP etc would not want to use kevlar on handrum heads because they could be liable for injuries. But then again you could keep a spare bongo mounted with kevlar heads handy just in case you got to use it to deflect bullets on stage, you never know. Next stop titanium armored-plated heads.

Leedy,

Talking about heads where can I get some chivo for my bongos? That stuff is rare around here.

Agree - if you are hurting your hands you are hitting wrong. I practice a lot on a bongo cajon and I know some others here that do as well. That is hitting WOOD. I have been doing that for years. Not a problem for me because I don't hit that hard - but it still sounds good.
