HI GARVIN,
MY RECOMMENDATION, IS FOR YOU TO SEND VINNEL A MESSAGE, FOR THE INFO YOU NEED ON THIS TOPIC. :;):

NOW , ABOUT THE JCR BONGO SKINS. YES, THEY DO HAVE, I BELIEVE, KIP, AND CALF SKINS, FOR THEIR BONGOS. BUT WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ARE JCR'S LATEST MONSTERS;

MULE SKINS FOR BONGO'S!!! :D  :;): AND BRO, IF THEY SOUND AS GOOD, OR BETTER THAN HORSE HIDE, IT'S "BINGO" BROTHER !!!

RESPECTFULLY,
CHARLIE "EL COQUI" VERDEJO

MANNY, I DO AGREE WITH YOU 100% ON THE CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUE. EVEN BACK IN THE 90'S, GON BOPS CUSTOMER SERVICE SEEMED TO ONLY EXIST FOR THE DEALERS. IT'S HORRIBLE, BUT IT WILL CONTINUE TO COST THEM, IF THEY DON'T SHAPE UP. EVEN THOUGH THEIR PRODUCTS ARE GREAT, I DON'T REALLY THINK THEY ARE WELL DEEP INTO THE BLACK, BUT RATHER MUCH CLOSER TO THE RED, INSTEAD. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHAT I'M SAYING, IS WITH TIMBA PERCUSSION. GROSSLY OVER PRICED! SO, SO COMMUNICATION, AND ALSO, SOME PRODUCT ISSUES AS WELL.

Agreed, Charlie !
Mule should be good, probably quicker than getting a new one from GB. I'm lovin the mule on my super requinto.
If Manny can reskin, should be ready in a bout a week or so-including shipping the skin from Isaac.

Tonio, :)

Yes, I asked to purchase a replacement. And I've checked Gon Bops' fine print. (Oh, and I was so used to doing this with my last 2 employers). And, yes, skins are not covered by their warranty--even if it broke the day after one's purchase. :(

Charlie, :)

Gon Bops then being a much smaller company back in the 90s, I can more understand it that they such poor customer service. They probably just couldn't afford to hire and extra head dedicated to this specialized task.

But, now that they've been acquired by DW, I see no excuse for DW not to provide great customer service on behalf of Gon Bops.

Re: Timba Percussion, I agree with you 100%. Their products are grossly ("ridiculously" is probably a more accurate word) overpriced, especially their cherry-wood congas (over $1,000 each) and bongos (over $900). To make business matters even more precarious for them, they have serious quality issues, e.g. conga shells cracking and their much hyped-up sound (except for their bongos) supposedly not living up to user expectations.

This is the exact opposite of what they claim: That they've supposedly corrected all the manufacturing flaws of the original Gon Bops drums. (Click on their website regarding this advertising claim: http://www.timbapercussion.com/history.html.)

I seriously think that the root of the problem behind Timba Percussion is that the original people who started the company have left and sold it to the current owner (who "was" related to one of the previous owners) whose business and personal skills, as well as musical and manufacturing knowhow, appear to be inadequate in running such a company well. ???

YES, I AGREE WITH YOU MANNY, EXCEPT FOR THE SMALLER COMPANY BACK THEN THEORY. BACK THEN THEY WERE STILL BIGGER, WAY BIGGER, THAN ISLA-PERCUSSIONS IS NOW, YET ISLA, IS DOING THINGS THE RIGHT WAY, WITH "TRUE TO THE CORE" CUSTOMER SERVICE! :D I LOVE ISLA!!!

Charlie, :)

Thanks for correcting me re: my smaller size company theory as applied to the old Gon Bops company. You're absolutely right, our 'mano Mario of Islas has been almost singlehandedly handling sales, manufacturing, delivery and customer service as well. And, so far, Mario has been successfully leading his company to performing an outstanding job in all these epartments!

I hope the Mario keeps it up. I'm optimistic that he will.

I was merely trying to mitigate the old Gon Bops' inadequacies and giving them the benefit of the doubt. But, you definitely know them better and has had firsthand experience with them in the past.

Now, that's my real "hermano" and my real "amigo"--someone who's not hesitant to correct me or anyone rather than someone who tells me only what I want to hear. 'Cause we're very similar in this regard!

Thanks a lot! As always, I have something new to learn from you. :D

GARVIN,
THE XRAY FILM I'M TALKING ABOUT IS THICKER THAN BOTH THE GB'S HORSE HIDE, AND JCR'S MULE SKIN. IT PROVIDES AN AWESOME ATTACK, AND IT DOES NOT SOUND CHEAP, GENERIC OR OFF THE WALL, OTHERWISE I WOULD NOT EVEN MENTION THIS WONDERFUL THING, MY AFRO-CUBAN TEACHER,
"EMILIO CAMACHO", LOVES IT, AND USES IT, ON ONE OF HIS BONGOS!
I ALSO PLAYED IT! (COLDER SOUNDING THAN SKIN? YES, TO A DEGREE, BUT PROVIDES THE SOLOIST WITH WONDERFUL CRAZY ATTACKS!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOO!

Bongoceros, there is a store in Bayamon P.R with so many skins to choose,it is unbelievable. I went there yesterday to buy a ready mounted head for the Hembra of 1 of my Bongos, the owner had about 40 ready mount to choose from and about 100 skins not mounted(Cow skin),he does his import from Venezuela. For the percussionits leaving down here is at the basement of Bayamon shopping center on road # 2 after the City Hall .

I love the kip on my macho, I got it locally at Haight st. music.
I also have several sheets of x-ray film that also works great for the macho.

X-ray is easier to mount than skin, and requires no soaking at all, it is much faster to mount because of that.......it is kind of hard to get a really clean trim job though, you need a really really sharp knife and tons of patience...

X-ray won't change from the weather either...

I an hook a few bro's up free like, with the x-ray if you Personal Message me, this x-ray film has no photos on it and is green.

Yambu if the X-ray film or mica is thicker than the horsehide and mule skin, it must be a b--h to put on. I have had my experience with putting on film, lots of patience and be careful... it will cut you, use gloves.
