CDldrum, Yes Mule would be a good choice for the Hembra but do not go too thick, 1/8 " is all you need,Cow is fine also. Since your Gonbops are standard size 8 1/2 , you may want to ask L & H to send you a ready mount head if he has any or to mount 1 for you. Then when you get it if it does not go on easy because of the temperature variations just turn it up side down filled with water until smooth & mount. Do not buy any of the ready mount offered by mass produce manufacturers, they are the same water buffalo type good for nothing. Timba Percussion use to sell ready mount steer heads & you could select the thickness, contact them. Hope this help

Great question. Typically the mule skins are thicker than the rest but the honest and straight answer to your question is simply "No", you can not tell by just looking at it. although there is no doubt that people do sell mule skin, however having said that, your best bet would be for you to buy from someone reputable, also, many of the forum members that have and do use mule can refer to you some of those dealers. Hope this helps.

King,

Excellent. I have searched the archives here and have a pretty good feel for the dealers that
will sell me the appropriate heads. Thank you. Saw some drum heads last week that still had
hair... how bizarre....but authentic .

Thanks again.

Peace, Chas
