Annoying Overtone JCR Campana

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

Vaya mi gente,

I bought another Campana before the Friday gig, this time the LP ES-9,nice fat sound, not too much overtone and very easy to handle. Now I carry both campanas in the Bongó bag and depending on the numero we play I just switch between the 2. Is like having the best of boths worlds.

To all bell players:
Try listening to your bell from the back of
the dance floor, with someone else playing it.
This is a way to objectively know what it's doing.
Can you still hear it clearly 10 feet away?, 20 feet away?
Are the overtones now gone? A young timbalero
told me his JCR was way too loud. I asked him
where he plays it? He plays it at home in his small
spare bedroom! Of course it's going to be loud.
I sent him some extra rubber nibs for the inside to dampen the sound.
Again,,,bells are a personal choice, and you should
either play them before buying or have someone you know and trust do it for you. Patience is also important
as good sound is also a question of the steel aging.
A saw a young bongocero, who is a rising star, playing
his LP bells. On the bandstand he was so afinque and
really doing a fine job. I walked to the back of the dance floor, and although he visually was great to watch, I could barely hear him! I had to leave before the set ended. A few weeks later he came to JCR. This was right before an important new gig he got with one of Salsa's legendary bandleaders. He switched to the JCRs
so he could cut through a loud band. I went to the
concert and the difference was major.

Franc,

I have 2 JCRs low pitch, one about 1/8 higher than the other,1 Meiln between mid and high and the LP Es-9. The Lp Es-9 has a fat sound but you really need a mic to power it,it is not like the Jcr which really cut thru the mix. I can tell you about those 2 because last time we played I recorded the music and you can tell the difference when I play the Jcrs and the Es9. I am not saying the Es-9 is bad but there is a flaw on her sound projection. BTW I am selling a Pearl Elite Fiberglass Bistre Black color Bongó,modified with traditional rims and Fiberskin heads on both shells. Also include is a Bongó bag,2 factory heads ,1 Nuskyn Hembra head and the ugly comfort factory rims .If any body is interested .

Franc,que pasa?

No,I have not seen that Gonbops bell, give me an address. A good sounding bell is one that the sound please you without taking in consideration the brand. Any bell I buy,I always use some glued rubber under the bell mouth to shape the sound and that have worked for me.You take a medium pitch JCR and you can make it sound very close to a low pitch just by doing the above mention. Ismael Timba in Bayamon has a variety of bells and also pure sound. Villa music in Santurce sells Remo and Meiln,I went there once to try them but they have too much overtone but you can cure that with rubber. You can get that rubber at home depot or at masso, remember to put some extra heavy glue for holding.

Franc,

I mean you have to put some better glue than the one that comes with the rubber piece if not they will become loose because of the hard hitting. I bought one called liquid nail which will not glue your fingers like crazy glue or the other cheap ones.

You can always dampen a bright sounding
bell. A dead sounding bell is a dead sounding
bell. Granted they are consistent because
of the machining process.
- Possibly OK in a recording studio, but
live, you'll be the only one hearing it. At the back of
the dance floor, it's another story. A good test is
to get someone else to play your bell and step 15 to
20 feet away, just like a soundman does during
a soundcheck...and then decide what works.
(Some drumset players
prefer a dryer bell, so JCR makes the Half-Moon
Mambo Bell.)
Just some of the players of JCR bells can be heard in
the orchestras of Eddie Palmieri, Gilberto Santarosa,
El Gran Combo, Bobby Valentin, Grupo Niche,
Sonora Poncena, Johnny Pacheco, and a lot
other great Salsa bands.

Issac,

I agree with you 100% I bought the Lp ES9 and the sound was nice however I took both my JCR and the ES9 to a gig and there was no comparing the JCR was much louder and cut right through the rest of the band the Lp just the opposite no more testing bells out untill I can go to the Bronx a stock up on diffrent sounding JCR's.
