Hello Leddy.

Thank you for the photos!!!

Really nice your Pan con Queso collection.

I have a set of...
Meinl FWB 400 (Cherry Red) with FiberSkyn 3's I gig and record with them. They sound great! A lot of times I'm not miked up (Coffee house gigs) and the synth heads are loud.

Old Matadors with a FiberSkyn 2 on the Macho, and I love them.

My most recent are Gen II's (acquired from a friend) These are VERY unique as the shells are made of foam. I contacted Marty and he verified that he indeed had a short run of Bongos made with foam shells, adding he hadn't seen them in over 30 years! The Hembra has a crack near the through-bolt location that I'm having repaired. I plan on putting some thin skins on and tuning them for Changui. These are for sale.

Now back to your question...

I have never played the Gon Bops But, the Meinls are very nice, having said that, I have my eye on the 5 lug Mathew Smith drums.

Hola Scott, would be a good idea to try first the 5 lug Bongó before ordering. They are kind of uncomfortable between the legs.

Hola Caballo.

Una pregunta hermano, que ventaja tiene un Bongo de 5 lugs sobre uno de 4 lugs.

Ya vi que son incomodos para tocar sentado pero que ventaja presentan los 5 lugs en cuanto a sonido?

Gracias.

Foam? Styrofoam? Foam from a coffee house? What kind of foam are we talking about?

Five lugs ( 5 cancamos) gives you more even tunning and as a result better sound, they tend to be unconfortable on the traditional bongo playing position, which is seating down. To avoid the disconfort, you rotate the lugs to avoid resting them on the knees. Five lug bongos ( bongoces de cinco cancamos) were made famous by Yeyito Iglesias, when he played with Cachao and Conjunto Casino back in the late 50's. Yeyito insisted on very precise tunning for the macho.
Photo of Yeyo on bongos with Cachao y Su Descarga, notice the oversized hembra (1957 photo).

I love that picture, do you know what kind of skins Yeyito preferred ? They look bleached in that pic, but it could be the glare from the lights. I have a thin bleached steer from Ralph on my timba macho and it's great. I don't know why Leedy thinks people are forgotten, I listen to a huge range of contemporary music, funk, pop everything, but I love to listen to these guys laying it down like no one else could and I know I'm not the only one !
