The wood looks beautiful on those Bongos. Can I ask from Dario and those of you that have played both these large size JCRs and the smaller JCRs what the difference is and which do you prefer? or is there a place for each size depending on what type of music?
By the way...I have begun restoring the Hembra. The one thing I did not do, nor will I do is tamper with the bearing edge on these bongos. I left it alone, with the original protective finish on it. You will see this in the pictures when I am done. After all the talk lately about bearing edges in the Conga posts, I would have to be stark raving mad to do so.

Hello everyone. I had hit a bit of a snag with the tuning lugs I needed, but I have remedied the problem and will have new pics of the Bongos in their Completed stage in about 2 weeks. They are going to look incredible.
Thanks.

That's a good question about those stickers. It would be nice to know. By the way, I had a delay in getting my bongos finished because I needed to have the tuning lugs for the hembra specially made. I just received them 2 days ago from Ralph Flores of Resoulution drums. He did a splendid job for me so I should have pictures of the finished bongos in a few days.

Hi breeze

What was the problem with stock lugs such as the ones from Rhythm Traders? Or did you just want something a bit more high end to go with those lovely shells?

Coco........The problem was that the Hembra shell has quite a bit of taper to it so that the same lugs that will work on the Macho won't align correctly on the Hembra. I decided to go ahead and have my friend Ralph Flores ( I call him my friend because he treats me as a friend even though we never met in person ) Make me a set that would fit the Hembra shell perfectly and they do!. I am very happy with them. As a matter of fact, I just mounted a skin on the Hembra today and will be posting pictures of these beautiful Bongos in a few days. I just want the skin to dry so I can remove both skins and put another coat of Polyclylic on the shells.

You will be suprized how easy it is to bend lugs. You need the right tool though. A pcs of square tubing metal stock is just the ticket.
But I can see going for a good clean set of lugs would be a small justification for such a nice shell set.

PLease do post pics of the completion.

They will be posted in a few days, and I think you guys will approve. You will see that the macho has straighter tuning lugs than the Hembra.
Thanks.

Here are the pictures guys. Sorry about the delay. I decided to go with semi gloss on the shell, and gloss in the carved middle portion. Sometimes too much gloss gets boring. Anyway, you notice I had to go with special tuning lugs on the Hembra due to the tapered shell. Thanks to Ralph Flores of Resolution for making them for me. Now what? on to another project I guess.
p.s...I put a Perez Coat of Arms in the middle wood block just for funs. Looks pretty good I think.

Great job breeze...they look amazing. Those lugs were worth the extra cost and effort.

I love what you did with the shells....the beauty of the grain really comes through.

What type of skins are those?

Hello Coco...the skin on the Hembra is Cowhide, and the Macho has a mule skin on it. They will need to be broken in but already sound good. I have been pondering the thought of selling them as well as some congas I have but I won't be 100% sure for a little while. I spend so much time on projects that I am not getting any playing time. Glad you like them.

Will.
