Play bongo with sticks or mallets??

I hear some of the old timers play or solo with sticks or mallets. I want to know more about this technique and the proper mallets to do that, and if it makes a difference?

search you tube ROBERTO ROENA VIDEOS, he uses sticks

It was Mongo that took solos on bongos with timbale sticks (stick on bongos) back in the Palladium days, a good 30 years before Roena.
