Fiberskyn Vs Skyndeep tucked heads M9s Which is better?

Postby salcero1 » Thu Jan 06, 2011 9:33 pm

I wanted to know if anyone owns the new version of tucked Fiberskyn and Skyndeep synthetic bongo heads for the Macho and Hembra?
Is there a significant differance overall or are they both excellent in sound and projection and worth buying? Your opinion on both and why? Thank you for your response in advance. Feliz Año Nuevo a Todos.

Saludos Salcero, I have use both. For the Macho they do sound crisp and do the job. I always carry one as spare in my gig case. For the hembra I prefer natural cow, mule or steer with at least 1/8" thickness. The fiberskin for the hembra does not produce the mellow deep sound I like.

Gracias Caballo para la informacion,
I use the tucked fiberskyn 3 on both the Macho & Hembra. I just recently re-skinned a 2MM muleskin from L&H Percussion on my LP John "Dandy" Rodriguez Legends series Hembra bongo and it has a beautiful deep tone as you like with natural heads. I guess that size is close to the 1/8" head on the Hembra that you use.I had to soak that bad boy for 10 hrs until it was pliable enough to mount. But it was worth the effort because after 72 hrs of the drying the head out the sound is perfect and considering the size of the Hembra (9") it has the deep bass tone I love and what an Hembra should traditionally sound like. Does the tucked Skyndeep satisfy your Macho needs? I find some bongoceros think it's just a bit too warm not like the Fiberskyn which has excellent projection especially on the "tic" of the martillo pattern and the slap attacks we're used to playing. I may purchase a Skyndeep macho to see the difference for myself. Thanks for your input once again. Best Regards always.

Saludos from PR! I actually bought a Skyndeep Tucked skin for the macho of one of my bongos. It is thicker than The tucked Fiberskyn and much thicker than the Nuskyn (which I personally don't like at all) and I found it to have an excellent tone, very similar to a natural skin. Now for the hembra, I wouldn't recommend it, as I found it to be a little too thin, too ringy. Just my 2 cents :D .

Take care!

Gracias Maelo,
I like the natural calf skin graphic on the Skyndeep heads. With the knowledge of the sound you've inputed I will try a set for myself (Macho & Hembra) it will round out my stock of heads in the tucked version model Remo has to date. I will post what I like or don't about the heads when I get them. I saw some videos with Jimmy Delgado, John Rodriguez Jr. and Eric Velez en un Bembe in Martin Cohen's house showcasing the Prestige Timbales, John's Line of Bongo with Remo Heads and Eric's signature conga from Toca Percussion. It just goes to prove you don't have to go 100mph in playing. Good sound technique of the basics provides excellent patterns and enjoyment for all. The Remo heads sound very crisp and dry on the bongos and congas as well as the timbales. This link has been shown before, just reviewing once again.

I agree with Leedy, it does depend on the material of the drum. For instance, I feel that Fiberskyn 3 tucked M9 sounds better on my LP Valje beechwood bongo, then the previous combination I was using which was skyndeep on the macho and nuskyn on the hembra for that low-mid tone. On the other hand I have skyndeep/nuskyn on a rubberwood Gen III that I wouldnt change for anything. It just makes my bongo ROAR. I have tried all the synthetic heads, and my least favorite is nuskyn for bongos, particularly on the macho, on the hembra it is out of sight.

Plastic will sound plastic, but Remo's FiberSkins ( orig design ) were laminated mylar plastic which the top layer peeled off. These heads were a bit thin and sounded like the old days when guys used old xray film on bongos. These heads were made like drum set heads but the plastic would pull out of the glue channel. NuSkinz are thicker and are mounted on a round profile skin wire. The heads aounded more appropriate for bongos but the plastic could & does roll off the skin wire. I contacted Remo to sugest they use a 4 sided squared profile skin wire like old valjes used on thin headed bongos, which locked the plastic to the angles of the wire to high tension dependability. ( you still should tune down these heads if not being played ) The new heads are still new and I have yet to put them through the test. I prefer the variety of tonal qualities from a variety of natural skins. My skins on my bongos last years and I always carry older used ones as replacements. I prefer the Remo NuSkins in the weight & thickness of the heads for winter time in moist air environments. But I dislike the tone and they are harder on hands since there is no elasticity in plastic. Its like playing a table top !
