Postby bongosnotbombs » Wed Jun 17, 2009 8:36 pm

A quick search today turned up some Junior Tirados, a Skin on Skin, a JCR and an El Piernas.
Thats a lot of bongos for one day. If only I had $2,000 to burn...............

Must be the economy! The Junıor ıs the one that sold for 690 last year - 510 now.

But, my frıend just spent 5,000 on a backup bow (the stıck)for hıs vıolın. He ıs not a pro musıcıan, plays chamber musıc wıth hıs frıends and he ıs far from rıch - but he ıs serıous about hıs musıc He got a great deal on the bow because ıt has a crack that needs to be repaıred and ıt needs all new haırs. It ıs not one of the best bows, not even ın the same league as the best bows, but ıt ıs a Very Good Bow - nothıng to be ashamed of and great for a backup.

Back to bongos - look what 2000 wıll buy ın thıs world. An entıre collectıon of great ınstruments lıke some of the heavıes here have!

The El Piernas have two cracks, I contacted the seller and he said the price would be $200 plus shipping if he does not sell the Bongó. I replied that having to repair will add more to the cost so the price should be lower. Also he will do the repair but if it is a quick fix or a half fast job just to get it sold, you will get an instrument unrelliable that may break in no time.

The Dandy will be my next aquisition. I am not a fan of mass produce but Dandy is in my opinion the best Bongocero ever and his Bongó should be special. Also it does not have the attachment on the center block for a stand, it is intended for the seated player.

Dandy wanted to recreate a replica of Mongo's Vergara. I sent him photos of Mongo's Vergara from different angles. I also gave him the exact measurements, macho 7", hembra 9". He took the photos to the LP Group. Dandy as a teen lived in LA for some years, as his dad was playing on the west coast. As a youngster, Dandy became friends with Tom Flores and spent many hours in Valje's shop. He selected the Valje hardware for his signature bongos in tribute to Tom Flores and the Mongo Vergara design as a tribute to "Don Ramon".
In my opinion, Dandy has been the tastiest bongocero in the business for the last 30 yrs. His main inspirations, according to my conversations with him, Yeyito Iglesias, Mongo, Manny Oquendo and of course his father. Look at Mongo's Vergara with the black lines and compare it with Dandy's LP signature. By the way, Mongo's Vergara is a solid Coaba piece, Dandy's LP is staves.

Dario,Cuco,Arre,
Am confused here, so Dandy's bongos are not solid shell?.........on his video that I attached I thought it mentioned that was like solid shell like the old cuban bongos........or something like that.........can you guys please shed some light on the issue since you guys have the experience here.

Leedy, I do have a Colombia Percussion Bongó And also use to have the Lp Valje. Like I said the Dandy is kind of atractive to have and since LP this days do not really make a top of the line model to compete with the boutique types, the Dandy seems to close that gap but that is my IMHO. Some time ago I contacted Tom flores for a quotation on a Bongó, he wanted $500 plus, too expensive.

I agreed that the Dandy looks indeed like the Valje but has a lower price ticket ( $250 at Steve Weiss, Musician friend will honor that price ). Juancho , on the video Dandy was talking about the inside finish which looks like it is a solid piece.

The lP Valje meausres are 7.25" & 8.5/8 as most of Lp Bongos.

My Colombia Percussion & and Dandys added to my wish list.

Juancho,

To me during the video what Dandy is trying to convey is that his signature bongo set give you the impression of being made out of one solid piece of wood, specially when you look inside. No doubt is a stave made bongo set but a lot of attention to detail was put into it to make it look like a bongo set carved out of solid wood. Jay Berek and Matthew Smith make great bongos out of staves today. Valje, Gon Bops and LP made great bongos from staves. Really, really I do not know what is the big deal. Let's not forget that Dandy makes any bongo sound real good. In the video looks like the bongo set Dandy is using has stock LP heads mounted (Water Buffalo Hide) and Dandy makes it sing beautifully. In my opinion Dandy's signature bongo seems to be a very fine intrument and professional grade, staves and all.
Got to be the player that makes the biggest difference. Take Care!
