Tomasito Cruz as per above recommendations of course.

May I also add Miguel "Angá" Diaz - Angá Mania

Excellent 5 drum stuff by the charismatic master. Including his philosophy on soloing.

It has been out on Pal for a while and should be available in NTSC soon.

Wow Looks good, wish the page was in 'English'.....what xactly makes one a "Master" drummer at his age???....the "mastering " of one style??....My new player I am looking at now and listening to is Eliel Lazo-Linares....for me he's the NEW kid on the block at age 32....chek out his work with the Art Ensemble de Havana and with the band Blanco Y Negro from the Netherlands...I never heard of this brother mentioned here....so MANY conga players so little time!...."JC" Johnny Conga....

Hi JC,
I hadn't heard him before, but Eliel Lazo Linares has some great solos on YouTube. Unfortunately, YouTube sometimes throws the AV sync off so it is hard to watch and listen at the same time. Do you know if he has any CDs or DVDs recorded?

On the Javier Campos Martinez DVD website, there is a little more detail in English if you click on the link "Verso de la pochette".

If you want to listen to Javier Campos Martinez' work, there is a nice CD by Afrekete, a group he led in 1997. The group includes Pancho Quinto, Maximino Duquesne, Lazaro Rizo, Jose del Pilar Suarez, and Lucumi (at age 12), with beautiful singing by Martha Galarraga and Ernesto "El Gato" Gatel. They actually do a lot of different folkloric styles, including Yoruba, Arara, Congo, Abakua, and rumba, and do one song, a combination of abakua and bata, that is different from anything I have heard.

Im not sure of dvd's, but there is a great book by Michael Spiro called the Conga Drummer's guide book. It is for intermediate to advanced players, and it really goes into depth about some advanced topics.
