Conga Drum Polyrhythms of Cuba, Haiti, and Brazil

Check out great forum on 2 outstanding books, at the
very website you are presently browsing, ie congaplace.com.
Locate as follows:
On upper left bar, home page, click Conga Forums.
On new upper left bar, click Open Discussion.
Scroll way down page to forum “Harry Tippins”.

One book,
Conga Drum Polyrhythms of Cuba, Haiti, and Brazil
is folkloric style and, features scores for hand drums,
shekeres, and bells for the following complete ensembles:
Afoxe, Afro Blue, Bembe, Columbia, Congo, Dahomey,
Djuba, Gaga, Guaguanco, Ibo, Jevioso, Kpanlogo, Maculele,
Mahi, Makuta, Nago, Palo, Petro, Samba, Tumbao,
Yanvalou, Yesa, Yuka, Zepaules.

The other book,
Congas Two and Three Sing the Song of the Drums
is written for “band” music, where the drummer plays
with other types of instruments. These scores are for
one person playing two or three congas, and include
bell and shekere parts as well. Rhythms included are:
Abakua, Afro Blue, Bembe, Columbia, Guaguanco,
Kpanlogo, Mombasa, Mozambique, Samba, Yanvalou.

Due to lack of marketing “attitude” by the author, these
books have remained rather obscure, not well known.
They are currently out of print, but there are still a few
copies for distribution. If you’re interested in purchasing
one, send your e-mail address and/or telephone number to
raphgon@gmail.com, for an e-catalog describing the books’ contents,
price, how to order, and a sample score.

Since their publication 10 years ago, they remain the most accurate,
complete, and user friendly scores of the music of the African Diaspora
(Cuba, Haiti, and Northern Brazil) available. Not a single error exists, despite close scrutiny
by the critics. There have been no complaints, but many kudos, including a rave review in Modern Drummer magazine, March 1995, page 102.
