Conga/tumba or conga/quinto?

Postby Hessel » Tue May 01, 2012 10:39 pm

After a couple of months of lessons I am looking to buy my first set of conga’s.
At the moment I can only afford two drums.
So what would be a wise choice: a conga/tumba or a set of conga/quinto?
I know, it is like asking your favourite ice cream flavour, but I am very interested in your opinions.

Best regards,
Hessel

I think the general consensus would say Conga and Tumba.

Those drums are the fundamento of rumba and casino styles alike.

Heck, you can play a guaguanco on the conga and tumba without the quinto and it will be recognized as a guaguanco.

Quinto is a great sound but more conducive to rumba.

If you get a gig playing with a conjunto, you would have to play it tuned down to be in tuned with the other instruments.

The larger space on the conga also gives you space for your right hand (for those unfortunate people who are right handed )

You keep masacote smoother if there is more space.

Tumba/Conga,
You can always crank the Conga tuning up every now and then should you desire an occasional quinto. That aside a Tumba/Conga will see you through all styles including the advantages Tumbas stated.
