Take a look at my recent post on them. They are awesome sounding congas, what the pros play like Eddie Montalvo and other top NYC pros.
I'm selling or trading 2 on my post ,$400 or trade.

Classics are great drums, by far my favorite of the LP line. The newer LP heads are waterbuffalo and don't sound or feel that great, but you could easily swap them out for some nicer skins. The hardware is very sturdy as are the drums themselves. Not a huge fan of the gloss finish, but thats just me, I hate shiny drums. Dario is offering a very good deal there, if you are in the market I would grab them from him before someone else does.

I too like the LP Classics... They are my current drums and I think they do the job well... One thing I must say though is that I had some trouble fitting some Synthetic heads on them. I ordered the Remo Fiberskyns, and the tumba fit perfect, but the conga head did not fit. When I talked to the LP rep he said that the LP Classics were the only drums that had this problem. Has anyone else had this same experience?? But other than what I mentioned I think the LP Classics are great drums.

Excellent drums!!!

LP Classic Model Congas have become the standard by which other wood congas in the market are judged.

hey folk, I also had some problems fiting an evans synthetic on the conga. The quinto and tumba never gave me problems, but the conga was a pain in the ass. It never sounded very good either and I had a hard time tuning it. Eventually I tucked a mule skin myself, so the problem went away. Woder if maybe the older traditional rims would work better than the comfort IIs?

Hello all

I was just on the Musicians Friend website. They have a set of LP Classic II congas its 3 drums Quinto, Conga, Tumba for $599.00. Are these drums true LP Classic drums were the Classic II changed in some way.

I am asking because I have a set of the performers series (3 drums) and they were $499.00.

The price for the Classic II seems to good to be true. I wanted to be sure they were not downgraded in any way.
I went to two stores they didn't have any Classic II in stock for me to check out. Can anybody out there help

Otto, beware the Classic IIs are not the same as the Classics! The IIs are more on the lines of the performer series, they use the same rims and hardware, and probably the same shells. Classics are far better than Classic IIs. I played a set at guitar center a few months back and was not impressed.

Hello DeadHead

Thanks for the reply.

I was confused as you can see below the specs on the drums show different hardware than the Performers, they have the Comfort Curve Rims but they do not mention anything about the skins which I found to be a bad sign.

But if you actually played a set and found them not to be that good then the price is too good to be true.

I thought it was a big improvement over my Performers but if they are not then I will pass on them.

Again thanks for the reply.

Otto

Otto, I think you are better off putting the extra $100 towards some new skins for your performers. From what I've gathered they are basically the same drum, you are paying more for the funky flame finish, which in my opinion doesn't look so great in person. Why they decided to use the classic name, I don't know? But they are by far not the same as the orignal Classics. If you look around you can find a used 3 set of real classics for the same price, they might have a few scratches or scuffs but who cares. Dario is selling a 2 drums for $200ea, which is a great price.

Hey deadhead...

Funny you mention the Evans synthetics, because I tried those too. Except I had the opposite problem of you... My conga head fit fine, but my tumba didn't fit at all. Actually I thought the conga head didn't sound that great either, although maybe thats because I didn't break it in. I took the two different synthetic heads not fitting my Classics as a sign, I guess I was meant to play on natural skins :D

Otto,
I have a quinto. The skin is LP Hand Selected and the sound is pretty good tuned down a bit. There was a thread on these drums in the past, with many of the same comments. It is NOT a Classic. However, in my opinion, a better sounding drum than the Performer Series. All things considered, I would place them 10 clicks above the Aspire, 3 clicks above Performer and 5 clicks below the real Classic and Matador (not comparing those two to each other). They are a GC/Musicians Friend only series. If you buy them, like most lesser expensive drums, plan on keeping them because the resale is not very good. However, I did see a Classic II tumba sell on ebay for around $250. I've also seen the same Classic II model in an Ash finish like the Gio's and Gon Bops Acuna's. When I walked into the GC, I thought they had Gio's on the floor. That was several months ago and it was in-store only.

In my opinion, if you are set on having 3 drums, it is a good purchase....1st time, not as a replacement to Performer. I would add $100 to your budget and buy 2 Classics and keep one of the Performers. You would be making a much larger jump up in quality and sound.

InstrumentPro.com has a 10% off coupon on fabuloussavings.com and free shipping. Get a new Classic quinto and conga for $700.12. You'll have 2 good quality drums and higher resale. Just an idea.

BTW, it says that coupon is good for anything..... including high end drums like the Gon Bops CA series. Not a huge discount but when applied to a $1300 set, that's a good chunk to apply towards a needed gift for the wife :D I'd call first though.

Good luck
Jim
