Because of my playing situation at this regular gig "church playing" I can walk in there and tune up right before a service or it would interupt the prayer meeting. So I ordered a synthetic head well I will get 3 for all of my congas, but they only had one in stock so I got that one in and installed it, its a remo nuskin. Sounds pretty good does have a good bit of overtones but I think thats ok for the type of building it is lots of carpet. Feels really nice on the hands because its smooth. Its different and im sure it will take a little getting used to but over all I think they might just do the trick. Now I wont have to worry about tuning up as often now and that was my goal.

Good stuff, as long as you are happy with their sound, all that matters. Myself, I am not a fan of synthetic skins..

If you are experienceing some overtones/ringing from the skin, a good cheap way to eliminate that is to stick a small piece of gaffa tape under the skin towards the centre of the drum.
Just a small piece approx 5-6cm long. Sometimes 2 pieces are needed in the shape of an 'X'
Try one piece first, see how you go.

The sound of a rawhide head is unbeatible im sure you all know that and its nothing new, Its just that I have to make this situation work somehow even if I have to sacrifice a little here or there the remo has a pretty decent tone for being sythn. its just a little differnet higher pitched and more ring to it. Whats gaffa tape? this may help bring them under submission.

Gaffa tape, often found on stage in use by stage crew or sound engineers...
Very strong durable tape. You can find some at a drum store, PA store, or music store normally.
See below for pic.

I used the remo nuskyn the only one they had in stock was the conga 11' , but these are for my meinl headliner set, They wont fit on the Luis Conte model, I have a copy of the post by remo that says the remo fiberskyn 3 skins will fit the Conte congas. If and when you want a copy of that let me know. I havnt yet got any remo skins for them yet I have to let the cash flow catch up to the spending if ya know what I mean.

Here is what remos says about the remo skins for Luis Conte Meinls.........

TYPE 4 CRIMPLOCK CONGA HEADS
FIBERSKYN® 3
11” QUINTO use 11” M4-1106-R5
11.75” ***CONGA use 12.50” M4-1250-R5
12.50” ***TUMBA use 13.00” M4-1300-R6

I cant for the life of me get anyone to tell me how you choose the right ones from music123.com because they list several of the same sizes with no remo part numbers.

for example they say
12.5 fits remo
12.5 fits toca
12.5 fits LP

now one of these fits on Mienl and its not listed on there which one it is I dont know and I have yet to find someone that can tell me.

G'day Bataboom

I have the mongo santamaria congas and evans heads fits it nicely. surf over to their website and check them out. they have them listed as the artist models. I am not sure if they will fit the luis models as they have the traditional rims.

Bless ya

Bataboom, its similar to duct tape, but DO NOT use duct tape.
gaffers tape has the same cloth or whatever is the strength, but the glue they use for duct tape is plain crap. After time, the glue will stay, but the material will come off-leaving all that glue. Not good.

Alafia Abure Bataboom and Tonio!
You know that's right, I had torn some material on one of my drum thrones, and so I grabbed some duct tape (the same kind pictured here), and fixed up my throne. Within three weeks, boy was it a mess. The tape material had dried up and started to peel away, but the glue stayed and it was a total mess!

Stay away from the duct tape brother if at all possible!

Suave!

Hey Bataboom,

as mentioned, duct tape is not the same.
Gaffa tape is thicker and its glue is stronger also. Check some of the types of stores I mentioned, give that stuff a try, it worked well with some of my students tambores who use synthetic skin.
