“My 1950's Candido Requena project”

Postby KING CONGA » Sun Feb 21, 2010 11:02 pm

Back from the dead!. Ok all yawls Conga junkies here are some pictures just sent to me by Matt. I’m impressed and think the drum looks sweet. It’s going to be nice when this drums starts to sing again. I can’t wait to install the rest of the hardware. It should have a nice contras with the rest of the hardware.
I’m happy by the fact that, considering the condition it was in, it has not taken as long as I thought, so far it’s been about four months, thanks Matt! can’t wait to have it in my possession.

Ritmo Hospital is the Mayo Clinic for congas. Old beat up congas come out better than new. Matt did an amazing job with my old beat up Juniors, when I got them they were better than the day Junior finished them. That Requena quinto has to be at least 50 to 60 years old, my guess probably 55 years of age. King Conga is going to received a drum better than the day Candido Requena made it. Vergara congas in 1959 sold for $65 dollars, the Cuban peso and the US dollar were worth the same back then. Requena congas were sold through Solis Music store in Havana, I think the price in the mid 50's was $45 per tumbadora. Photos of my Juniors the day they arrived in Ritmo Hospital and of the day they left.

Wow, She will sing again!!!!!! Thank you Matt the drum looks incredible, unbelievable. Matt did such an incredible job with the restoration of this Requeña. It turned out 100% better than I expected. The drum is coming together so nicely. It turns out that I have to modify the backing plates that I made because I was off a little on the pattern but that’s ok. Just being cautious and wanting to make sure that the glue dries well on the end Matt temporarily installed a wire, when I’m ready to install the cuero, which I already have, Ill remove it.
Matt congratulated me on this drum but if anyone need to be congratulated it should be Matt. for an exceptional job Thanks Matt.

Looks fantastic. Glad you kept the handle. Get some skin on that drum and let it sing!

Candido Requena is smiling from heaven. Incredible job. Matt takes his time, he's a one man operation, but worth the wait. That looks to be the sweetest quinto on the land. Stay away from thick heads and mule, just put a medium cow hide on it, always lubricate the lugs and let that baby sing. Let the spirit of Mongo guide you on a quinto solo!

The last name is REQUENA not REQUEÑA.
