Tune: Salsa en Moperc test. Just a quick ditty, still needs some other instruments.. timbales etc.

Its only a 128khz mp3 so ... don't expect too much. I 've only had it for 10 days and not broke in yet.

You can check out other tunes too, if you wish.

Tonio,

Very nice sound from your Moperc conga! I'm sure that the sound will only get better with age.

Is your low drum one of your cherry-wood Islas? The tumba?

If only San Diego were near, I too would be interested in checking out your band.

Thanks for sharing your sound clip,

Glad you guys liked the tune(s). Thanks for the listen.

I use clavetone as a dipository for tunes. On this tune it isn't a band per se, just a few guys came in to do some tracks at my studio. The bass is not real, its a VI.

I used an LP Tumba & low tuned conga along with the Moperc.

THANKS FOR POSTING THE SOUND TESTS. I HAVE NEVER HEARD MOPERCS LIVE. BUT, BASED ON YOUR AUDIO CLIP, THEY SOUND BEAUTIFUL AND RIGHT ON THE MONEY. IF YOU WOULD TONIO, COULD YOU POST YOUR OPINION ON THE SOUNDS OF BOTH DRUMS, AND WHICH YOU'D PREFER, FOR A GIVEN PURPOSE.

THANKS BRO,

If you listen to the clips, I think you may agree with my opinion of Moperc vs Isla.
My 1st thought is that I wanted a Moperc conga (segun) mainly for Salsa based on the reaction I got from the Mopcer Salsa Club bongos I got last year. I anticipated a folkloric salsa (if that makes any sense) tone for Moperc congas. Open tones to be nice and cutting and detailed yet not too sustained.
Somewhat open, but not in the back. Nice bass tones, with sharp and upfront slaps. Another words "in you face" with some phatness.
I think my anticipation of sound is there, but is not broken in yet so the sweetness has not developed.

Isla (mine are cherries) = Rumba w/ some folkloric tone was my anticipation. They are just what I thought they would be. My description would be of course rumba, but in a wet tone. Nice deep open tones that feel /sound full and phat. Slaps are nice and crisp for Salsa ,yet has a distant not direct/upfront tone (Latin Jazz-think Ray Barretto). For rumba its nice old skool and not too overbearing vs. the open tones. Nice detail in the slaps yet is not direct, as though there is an resonance that blooms in a minute(short) delay. I will use the wet analogy again here. The cherry wood probably has alot to do with this character. The bass tone is so huge, even in the quinto. The conga gives a great character on tumbao. I know Mario dislikes Salsa, but man the bass tones gives soo much body and character to a simple tumbao. My biggest love of the Isla's are the melodic properties- they just sing.

All in all, I would say they both do it for me. Depends on the project at hand to determine which I would use. Sometimes I like to change up on a different tune. I know that wouldn't be possible with a live gig, however.
I do want to get a complete Moperc set, but experience on the whole transaction was not the best, no fault of Michel of course. Being in Quebec, Canada is hampered in a logistical way. I've been finding out after the fact that Quebec is difficult location for import/export in/out of USA.

Tonio, i just liestened, to your audio clips, and the are great, i really enjoyed them. Both the Moperc & the Isla audio clips are good. The Moperc clips is shorter.

What did you use to record, it was a hi tech task, we enjoy on the forum.

You really got off on the Isla's at the middle of the track, i liked the sounds, they were really nice and loud, the very high pitch slaps on them is what i dig.

did you mic the congas?

Thank you!!! so much for taking the time to make the audio clips, and posting them on the forum.

Way to go Tonio!

Nice work man... you can play those tubs!

They both sound nice.

Do you find the maple ringy when played by itself? Ive always wondered about this wood.. being a tone wood and all, but so few conga makers use it.

The obvious answer to the choice of wood. They are made in Canada.

Thanks for the listen. Hopefully it captured the tones of the drums! I think it did.
They are subtle recorded, but in person its quite different.

Mr Conga - I used a Shure Sm81 condensor mic. About 2.5 ' up and abut 6" back. It was recorded in my home studio that is acoustically treated. It is on the dry side so there is not anomalies acoustically. I use a popular DAW(Digiatl audio workstation) . I played a scratch track to guide my friend pianist on a MIDI controller. Later it was converted into a VI-audio. Then I added other instruments - horns , Vi bass, and retracked the congas. Then mixed the tune.

Tony (congaDR) thanks bro!! Yes the Mopercs do ring in isolation. With other instruments or live, you can't really hear it. Maple has a nice tone. It has a nice depth to the open tones(PHAT). what I like about the Mopercs is the directness(in your face) of the slaps. The slap ringing is low in pitch and shorter in decay vs Isla. But they are still new, so a few months and I'm sure they will sound even better. In isolation any drum will ring- they have metal hardware :D that does include Juniors, SOS etc etc. Its a simpathetic harmonic which give its character to the slaps IMO!

I think I may give it a light Manteca treatment, due to the skin is rather dry. Or maybe shea butter, which I never have tried. I just don't want it to get to slippery.

BNB, you got that right !
