I learned of Junior when I bought the album "Concepts In Unity" by Grupo Folclorico y Experimental Nuevayorkokino, his workshop with his congas was the album cover, that was 1975. That same year Willie Colon came to Miami and Gene Golden came on congas for Milton Cardona, Gene was playing 2 Juniors. After the show Gene gave me Junior's number. I called Junior and back in those days he was asking $200 per drum. Shortly after that Junior dropped out of sight for a few years, he became a resident at "Hotel California" for a time. I cought up with him years later and we bacame friends.
Omelenko1: Interesting story, I remember Gene telling us that Junior was making him a ash conga and how they use to go over there and hang out and coax Junior to finish the congas there were waiting for. Most of my conga playing buddies over here have no idea who he was or even notice the craftsmanship that went into making theses beautiful conga's and how he contribute to the conga making company's. I got that album too.I believe Grupo Folkorico will be playing in N.Y.C this month.
