i have my new Quinto and conga with five and six lugs and i dont known what is the best way to tune.
A friend told me that his percussion teacher says that the best way to tune is alternating.
But i also read that the best way is going around. My friend´s teacher says that this is bad for the head

2 3 5 4

6 5 6 3

4 1 1 2
/\ /\
Alternating. Going around.

What is the best? there are other ways? how should i tune with five lugs? how do you tune your congas?

(excuse me for the posibles writing mistakes cause i´m spanish and i dont write english very well. if somebody write spanish I will be very grateful)

I have tuned both ways. To keep the the HOOP or Collar from warping make sure you tune each key evenly. Always look at the collar after tuning by tilting the drum a little and turning the drum around looking at every area of the collar so it is not more 'Pulled down" on one side more than the other. that is about as even as you can get. Today I still turn in order 12345. One turn each all around, until I am satisfied with the sound/tuning. At your Service....HAPPY NEW YEAR JC JOHNNY CONGA.....

i tune 1,2,3,... on congas, but i use alternating on other drums(kit), but also for perfect sound tap the head about an inch into the drum, with one finger placed lightly in the center of the skin, tap all around to make sure the sound is even, this way you even out the overtone, and make sure the drum is tuned perfectly.
