Excellent sites with rudiments and rhythms - You must check this out!

A place where discuss about secrets, tips and suggestions for practicing on congas and to improve your skill and technique ...

Postby Salvael » Fri Dec 31, 2004 7:17 am

When I started playing percussion, specially congas, I didn't have a teacher or a master who could help with my technique a guide me; so, like a lot of us, started looking on Internet for information about congas and other percussion, and found a lot of them, but the bad thing of this issue is the time spent in computer just looking for some site that could give infromation FREE; this is why I started this new topic here, to give the sites I had found during this time, so you don't have to waste time and better use it for practicing. My only advice is to print the info in this sites and start practicing. I hope you could contribute to the community and give more sites.

- http://www.congaplace.com/instrument/congas/index.php(Im sure you know this site, is one of the best ones  )

(excellent for those who are starting, it has all initial info)

(a lot of exercises for sound development and some rudiments, excellent)

(really good information about folkloric cuban rhythms, I liked it )

( really good site for learning how to plat the RIQ )

( site with rhythms, it is in german, but eassy to understand )

(good rudiments for timbales )

http://www.lpmusic.com/Play_Like_A_Pro/Tips/index.html

http://www.lpmusic.com/Play_Like_A_Pro/Tech_Support/index.html
(sites from LP, they are good and very helpful)

(check out the songs, and specially the movies, they are exellent,-check Gio simphony of percussion :) -)

(some info from Meinl)

(good site from Alex Pertout, some lessons)

Well, these are some sites I could get in this moment. I hope they help you and if you find some new ones post them in this forum.

Thanks. NO WAR!!!

From what I see stoned0.pdf is a trasformation of the STICK CONTROL method for snare to a "stick control" for congas.. and this makes it EXCELLENT!

Job well done I'd say..!

Ey, I also would like to comment about an excellent software called "Percussion Studio". This program is great; you can write and play in the computer any percussion instrument, also control the tempo, the accents, play as many instruments you want at the same time, mute the ones you want, and write in whatever meter you want. You can download the instruments on the same site, and also an infinity of rhythms writen by the users. The only problem is you have the option to pay $29 in order to be able to save what you have writen. It doesn't matter if you choose to save them or not, it is really helpful for practicing, and have fun.

The site is this:

I hope you enjoy it. Give your comments if your liked it or not.

Ey, one last thing. If you have seen tha video "Anga Mania" you have to see this site. It contains almost all rhythms and patterns Anga plays in his video. This is a complete and well done transcriptions of the hole video. This must had taken some time to the person who did it. If you have not seen the video, you can look in ebay.com, it is there almost all the time but not always, or just try to play the patterns, they are really good and an advande level, maybe too advance, but nothing you cannot do with practice.

Here it is:

http://lib1.store.vip.sc5.yahoo.com/lib....ns'

Oh, and don't worry if it doesn't open immediatly, it takes its time to open, it needs Acrobat Reader.

I hope this help you. See you

Hi again. Here there are more sites with more and more information and rhythms for percussion. I hope you like them.

( a lot of information about these religious drums, but not written rhythms)

( Exellent website, even when it looks "rustic", it gives information I'd never seen in any other place)

( an extense list of rhythms from all the world, not just latin, but it is kind of confusing trying to read it)

( I really have not seen this really well, but it is hand written and it very long-77 pags.- It needs Acrobat Reader, so bring some lunch while it opens)

This is everything for now. Give some comments of this sites.

Salvael!

I think You have opened Pandora's Box! I have printed the ''Newbies Congas'' or something and ''Stoned hand drum''. The other stuff (Riq, Alex Pertout lesson page) is also very good and inspiring, especially the interviews on Alex's Page.

My post for checking the page and some basic skills videos (tumbao, variations, rumba, mozambique, tabla and indian rhythmics, gigs tapes...) from Pete Lockett, seems like a very cool guy and multi oriented and #### good percussionist with a good web page too...

Thank you Gurupimpi for your post. This Pete Lockett seems to be really good both studio and live percussionist, but the best is he is helping with online lessons, videos and mp3s to all who enter to his website. This man is really preading his knowledge for no money.

Thanks

(this site is kind of simple, but you can see some good stuff)

(you may know this one, it has a lot of info, more than 400 lessons it says. some links work, some others not. try ''hand drumming'' for more lessons)

(i'm proud to present this site, it is incredible, you can listen to whole songs from different bands, really enjoy it!!)

This is it for now, keep checking this forum for more links, and contribute to it adding more sites.

I'm getting addicted from practicing and from this forum! For ten days now i'm spending my time in humid shelter where we have rehearsals, practising and working on technique and chops. My hands and head are shaking all the time, maybe i should see a doctor... Cold hand drum turkey has got me... :)

Salvael, great job indeed! Today I have a gig with a band, and thanks to you and this forum, i can see the difference in my heel-toe technique (much better volume and more equal sound flow...)

Hardly wait!

Till next post, ENJOY!!!

Nothing to contribute to this thread, just posting my band's new website. Hope you check it out. Am only playing drumset now, but will be incorporating congas shortly when we play on a stage that has enough room for them. I'm sure you cats can relate to the cramped stages in clubs. I have a new cocktail kit that I am wanting to incorporate the congas with real soon.
Check this out if you will and let me know what you think:

Hi. This time I won't post websites. I will put some of the best videos I have seen and that really helped me a lot. i know this is not encolsed in the topic of this forum, but... anyway.

- "The studio Percussionist" by Luis Conte.
(this video is just amazing, it is a master class for working in the studio and he gives a lot of tips. he shows rhythms like funk, swing, tumbao, songo, and so many more things, the best video for me I should say)

- "Conga Virtuoso" by Giovanni Hidalgo
(another great video, covers a lot of rhythms and improvisations on them, exellent)

- "Calle 54''
(this is for those who love Latin Jazz. In here the masters in all instruments of LJ meet and give us an amazing display of talent)

- "In the tradition" by G.H.
(very good video. bolero, charanga, chachacha, and he explain the percussion parts of each rhythm. a lot of solos)

- "History of Songo" by Changuito
(a real master class, he shows so many rhythms and patters for drumset, congas and timbales, Just amazing)

I think these ones are the best i have seen until now, but there are some others a haigly recommend, even if they are not exellent, but have helpful information:

- "Conga Drumming"

- "Fundamento II"

- "Basics on bongos and timbales" by Rhichie Gajate-Garcia

- "Live in PAS: Luis Conte" and "live in PAS: Steve Gadd"
( in this last one Luis Conte appears at the half of it with Alex Acuña also)

- "Buena Vista Social Club"
(we cannot forget those musicians of some years ago)

- "Rhythms and Grooves: Supernatural"
(Raul and Karl from Santana give an explanation of what they play in some songs on the Supernatural album. Rhythms are noted and very easy to read)

- "Mana MTV Unplugged" by Mana
(even if this is not a instruction video, it just shows Luis Conte in action, he is an amazing percussionist. Conte plays all the 14 songs)

- "Conga Maters" and "Conga masters meet again" by Changuito y G.H.
(amazing duet with 4 congas each one in the first video and 3 on the second one)

This is it for now. I know you will have more videos to add to this list but these are the ones I really recommed. Check http://www.ebay.com for some of this videos, or just buy it whereever you find them.
I hope this info helped you.
