Hi All
I was recently listening to the Rolling Stones where they are using congas I believe that Ray Barreto is playing on that song.
I was wondering if anybody knows what rhythm was being used It sounds like a basic tumbao with some variation maybe JC or Ray or anyboby else can tell me about this.

Wow Jimmy Mauleon, from NYC, that's another drummer that was busy in the studios of NY and recorded with some great players. He unfortunatly passed away in the 80's I believe. As for the RStones, it was probabaly Ray B, but I don't remember the tune. Ray had a tendency to move the tumbao around depending on the "style" of music he played to. He also played "funk" beats like gungun pac-gungungun pac. Basic back beat on drum set actually, but done on congas.....JC JOHNNY CONGA.... :;):

Hello all
The song Iam referint to starts out with the lyrics "Please let me introduce myself" I think the song may be titled "Sympathy for the Devil" but I'm not sure.
I hope this helps to narrow it down
Thanks for all the help

Otto,
I can't help you out with the specific rhythm, but the name of the song you are looking for is indeed "Sympathy for the Devil", which starts off with solo conga and a few yells from Mick Jagger.
Another early Stones song with prominent conga drums is "You Can't always Get What You Want". The congas kick in towards the end of the song.
I,too would be interested in finding out the exact pattern for each song.

Yup that's the one.......... Sympathy for the Devil - its Jimmy Maelen. or Ollie? Sorry JC , different from who you were thinking?
Jimmy played with Roxy Music too. He's a full gringo, but played awsome. GOn Bops international model. Great tone, and actually had a album out. He was hip in the late 60-70's
with mostly rock type groups in NY. He even played with Gato Barbieri

I did a websearch and it turns out that the conga player on "Sympathy for the Devil" was Rocky Dijon (Dzidzornu), who played with the Stones until 1968. Rocky played on other Stone's tracks such as "Child of the Moon", "Factory Girl", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". The Stones used him again in the early 70's for the song "Can You Hear Me Knockin'".

I'm an oldie but goodie, like J.C. so, I can remember 98% of what you guys are referring to: a) There may have been a different conga player, when "Symphony for the Devil" was recorded in the studio, for subsequent release, b) but I'm certain I saw Mick playing the congas, on this same song, and it was in concert. It's hard to mistake Jagger, by view, on a stage. I'll still give away 2% on my accuracy above, because I was probably stoned on the ganja and juice, at that precise moment.

Peace,

Ray

Hello all
I have a copy of the song "Sympathy for the Devil" I was wondering if I emailed or posted a copy of the song (if its allowed on this forum) could anybody listen to and chart it out
I have tried listening to over and over but its still beyond me to figure it out Maybe JC or one of the other Masters could chart it.
for example 4/4 HTSSTHOO etc. (Heel Toe Slap Tone etc)
if RLLRRL could be included I know its a lot to ask but this will help me figure other rhythms in the future.
thanks

Hi Otto
Havent got the tune your after to hand but heres a couple of nice grooves for funk/soul/hiphop kinda things. The first is, as Johnny said, basically doubling up with the kit drum; the second has got a bit of a swing to it and is played on three congas with quinto in the middle. Ive used dots to show sixteenth note rests [ or, in the case of the first, you can ghost] and brackets for strokes on the tumba.
1: O.O.S.[O]O.OO.S.[O].
R R R R L L R R R
2: OO..S..S.OO.S[OO].
R L R L LR R L R
The last two notes are played with LH on conga and RH on tumba
Hope this makes sense - peace and love

Maybe I can email it to you, Let me know if thats ok with you

Congastu
I"m in my office drumming on my desk working on those grooves I'll let you know when I get them down.

The Internet is a beautiful thing I can keep my level of excitment for playing by reading and asking questions of masters who are so generous with their hard earned knowledge.

Again many thanks to all who contribute to this forum.
and many thanks to JC, who already has done alot to help me continue on my path.
I have been playing for 3 months now there is not a day where I don't practice even if its only 30min.

I am close to 50 but this is something I always wanted to do
and JC and others have helped me find the path. I am have a great time

Many Thanks to All
