Reading Slaps - Which slap is which

A mate was telling me the other day about a slap he learned from an old djembe master. he called it the bass slap or "thunder slap" and as the name suggests, its played in the centre with splayed hands. Apparently, it gives one helluva crack,only thing was the guy in question used to go through skins on a monthly basis!!!
