I lived in Miami for 17 years and know everybody there is to know there. I have worked with everybody their except Willie Chirino, who BTW only works maybe once a year, for ego sake. that is why I say what i say. Tomas couldn't even go to Europe when we went with the Show "Drummin" and Tania Leon the creator was very upset with him and Lazaro, cause I had to hire 2 new guys to go on the trip after weeks of rehearsal and a couple of shows with Tomas and Lazaro. They did not have there paper work together to leave the states and reenter. I have worked with Tomas with different bands in the Miami area, that's why I can speak on the brother. don't get me wrong he's a nice guy but I wouldn't take a lesson from him. People, understand that some Cuban musicians "make up" a lot of stuff about playing which isn't necessarily real when it comes to playing. They do it to seperate themselves from others. I am speaking from personal experience. Wickly Nogueras is another, great hands but can't play a tumbao for more that 2 minutes before he is off on a tangent of drumming, what I call "overplaying", some people call it "Timba". Yes it has it's place, but you can't dance to it so how long will it last, don't blink your eyes cause it just passed you by.........At your Service...JC JOHNNY CONGA..................

Gracias Jorge...No it is not the same Tomas. I also met this Tomas in Miami when he came with "El Medico de la Salsa" and the first thing he asked me was to get him a gig. I told him "buena suerte ,asere"..if you want my personal opinion of his playing, he can "Timba". Nuff said......JC JOHNNY CONGA.... ;)

JC, to which incarnation of Irakere did Lázaro Alfonso belonged? I had known only two tumbadores in Irakere. Jorge Alfonso "El Niño" and Miguel "Angá" Diaz, who replaced the former, when "El Niño" burned in fire himself. Is Lázaro Alfonso, the famous Lázaro Cinco-Tumbas?

Lazaro is "El Nino"'s older brother who now lives in Miami. He started with Irakere and then Nino took the gig,up until his flameing demise a few years back. He set himself on fire on his birthday at his own party and killed himself. Nino was the first to use 5 congas. Lazaro doesn't play 5 congas. Good batalero,he was my bata teacher in Miami. I was told he had been drinking, which contributed to him pouring gasoline on himself, and setting himself on fire.. I never approached Lazaro about it, out of respect so it was never a conversation but we all knew the story. Lazaro had actually taught younger "El Nino" how to play when he was coming up in the rumbero community in Cuba. You can see Lazaro in Miami with Daniel Ponce at Adalberto's Friday night "Rumba series",in the Design district on 48th st. I believe Adalberto maybe registered here for his address to his sight, which I'm also on playing quinto with Miguel Cruz another great "Rumbero" and buddy from waaaaaay back....At your Service...JC JOHNNY CONGA.... ;)

Franc, you generally can't go wrong with Dworsky's stuff. I don't know about all of his books; but several I have are very straight forward, and easy to work through.

Take care,

Ray :D
