Yes it is the pattern for the macho. 2 drums are not used when playing son. Another pattern is:

HTSTHTTT.......Heel tip Slap/tone Heel tip tone tone.
1+2a3+4a...........
LLRRLLRR........TRY THIS PATTERN OUT AND SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT.....At your Service...JC JOHNNY CONGA....

Hey Fish, I, too, play the bolero in that fashion. I once heard a live recording of Santana (in South America) on which they performed Samba Pa Ti and Raul Rekow played the bolero with those sixteenth notes. I liked it and have played it that way since. I will also play it without the "&" note of "3" on the high drum, depending on the melody or bass line.
