Hi Diceman and franc. I think doing doubles slow, loose yet hard, will eventually give them volume close to that of singles, also depending on the drum - a bassier drum like a tumbadora may give more bounce and volume than a quinto, as said before. Doing doubles or any rolls slow is a great way to strengthen them and lays the groundwork for good sound and volume at higher speeds. The double and single rolls are "different animals"; I don't think one kind of roll is more important than another, any kind can be used. To me what's most "important" is to enjoy the music.

Yoni, Franc,

Is this Transglobal sharing, or what!!
Maybe you are right, I should practice more on a Conga rather than the Quinto, where you need more speed as the bounce is less.
I guess what I find is that I have a slow double, which is two distinct movements with each hand, and a very fast one which is as you describe, Yoni, an open tone followed by by a slight tipping of the hand and a pull away, which gives the second tone. Different muscles for each.
My challenge is doing the second method slower (maybe try a bigger drum), and the first method faster (more practice). And the volume.....?????
Thanks for input guys, appreciated, and I will try what you suggest.
BTW, I just gots some mules from Isaac, my next project!!

cheers

For the double stroke guys .I was taught that the "second" stroke of the double is more accented(played harder) on purpose...then build for speed and clarity..."JC" Johnny Conga... :D

I will take that to heart, JC. The second stroke comes naturally softer for many, so working on it harder makes sense.

Oooh, now I can't stop... One more thing - The "fish" (heel toe) roll and open double are "related"... Do the "fish" one and pull hands to the edge of the drum - so just the "toe" ends of the hands are bouncing on the head - the open double can come from that.

Just another observation on rolls in general - I've heard many great conga solos without any rolls in them at all!

All the best,

Geeez!

I'm sitting at the desk in my new job's office and reading this thread... I just got yesterday fyberskins for my fiberglass and can't wait to get home and put them on and start playing those doubles, since they eated my brains out. There's a progress but still nothing like WAW.

Yoni, I really like your putting the words together, motivating indeed.

JC, your DVD is out, selling? Can I order it?

Guys take care, Groove Your Music!

Nothing like a gentle double roll to soothe the savage beast in her, I say.

Ahahah! Yoni!!
Yes! I do that one every time we meet!
She just smiles, and I have to grin from ear to ear!
I start with bass touches and speed up intil it's all tones, then end with slaps..
The slaps are the best!
