I've a problem right now. my sister work at some kindergarden, then her school plan to make an african night. she ask me to direct her students(ca 4 years old) to play percusion in a ensemble at that event. have you any idea? i dont have any idea because I don't know what the children can do at that age(4 years). have you this kind of experience? I really need your advices.

well i've done some events like this and i can tell you that this age is tricky
you have to start by choosing the more talented kids and give the some major role instruments , and give the rest simple instruments so they cant mess the things up

choose the rythm you want them to learn (not necessary african ) thats a little bit hard depending on the culture and society of the kids , her in Lebanon its easy to get them play a rythm because everyone since birth hears the music so its easy to get the rythm

start distributing the instruments and do your own arrangment of instruments (even if they're not used in the music you choosed ) just let everyone get a role

it would help if there's a melodic instrument(Sax ,guitar...)

just remember keep it as SIMPLE as possible ( dont try to go into the clave explanation ) , remember they are just having fun

i know every situation is different from the other so i hope i helped ,if i remembered anything more i'll post it

In reference to kids,it is all about rolls playing,(for me it was more easy becouse I could take there some of my people,(from the percussion /ensemble),and point out to the kids to emitate the patterns, but you could start with some easy percussion/patterns and in relation to the numbers of kids, set up groups of percussion instruments with would cover and ensemble.Dr. Zaragemca
