:D OK u got me. I haven't seen the new Nyskyn's yet> the report on them were they were the best yet in "synthetic" skin. I can get a "short" oooom, on the Evans/synthetic,but not like a real skin, and it sounds like a squeek more than a ooom.......Never say Never!........Thank you.....JC JOHNNY CONGA.....

Do you hit the drum with one hand and glide with the other or do you hit then glide with the same hand?

Just kidding--I'm actually very pleased with the overall sound. My slap needs a LOT more practice and I rarely practice long enough at one time to develop a groove--the rythym sounds a little bit mechanical still.

My weak hand slap is pathetic, but I'll simply work on it more. In both hands I still tend to tense up the fingers for the slap, and still tend to hit the drum harder than necessary.

Can't make the moose call tho :)

I bought my first guitar about a month ago, and started slacking off on the drums--need to get back on the throne!

out of all the synthetic heads out there, remo new skin feels the best to me. i got a chance to play on all the good synt. heads out there(new skin, fiber skin, evans conga head) at w.g.i. world championships. all the heads have there good qualities.
fiber skin-worm full sound
evans- good slap texturde feel
new skin- great full sound, feels soft on the hands, great slap, looks like skin.
everyone should try all of these you might find something you like

The moose sound is called "glissando". This is a quote from "Congas - Tumbadoras" by Birger Sulsbrück: " Using the RH, put your thumb on the first joint of the middle finger of the same hand. Wet the tip of the middle finger with your tongue and place the finger close to the edge of the head. While the LH plays a light open stroke, move the RH towards the center of the drum. The finger should vibrate along the surface of the head producing (hopefully!!) a glissando sound. With practice you can make the "oooh" sound with either hand without the open stroke. The tumba is usually the easiest drum to use for this effect." end of quote.

This has helped me a lot and with a little practice anyone can do it. Trying wetting your finger a lot and do it over and over again - it works!!

The best examples I can think of of that moaning sound are the very last tone you hear at the end of Eddie Money's "Two Tickets to Paradise". When all the instruments stop playing, that ooooooomh sound is heard distinctly by itself. Another example is the very beginning of El Chicano's "Viva Tirado". The beginning of the tune has the bass playing it's distinct riff with that oooooomh sound in between. This vamps about 4 times before the Hammond organ comes in. Very cool effect.
