SCORED ON A MATADOR

Postby KING CONGA » Thu Apr 04, 2013 4:58 pm

This is my latest addition.
Won this on ebay yesterday. I had an advantage because I did not have to pay for shipping, $ 97.00  , not too bad, will pick it up today.
My first Matador. Looks to be in nice shape, not to mention that it comes with a stand.
It's believed to be from 1973 but it does not look to be that old to be, I guess Ill find out later on today.

Cheers.

Nice looking tumba at a fantastic price and them Matador tumbas sound good.
I do not think the tumba is from 1973 back then I do not think LP was making
wooden congas or the Matador line. That golden rounded sticker under the Matador
decal probaby says made in Thailand. 1993 is more like it and the drum is probably
12 1/2" not 13".Great buy, congrats.

You got a great deal on that drum. Looking at the little gold sticker tells me that it was made in thailand, so I agree that it is probably much newer, but nevertheless, Matadors have always been a " you can't go wrong " with drum so you got a great deal. Congrats.

Thanks all.
Just as I suspected, not a 73 but 93, not a 13" head but 11.5"
No cracks :D but does have some battle scars  . All of the chrome cleand up very well :D , just like new. This drum sounds great too.
Will be keeping an eye out for a second Matador.
One thing that did surprise me was how sturdy the stand is, and it's in like new condition as well
Here are some pictures I took of my drums, the only one missing is my Requena which is in Phoenix, AZ.

Hope you enjoy.
Cheers

Just scored these up on CL for $300 although old, this is My first complete set. They have a few small dings and the chrome needs a little love but they should clean up well. Couldn't help notice how identical they are to yours King Conga

An old Matador in good shape for $97 ?!!
That is a good deal!
I have only the tumba left from my original set of three.
Old Matadors were sweet drums.
Enjoy!

Wow Apollo, great score for sure! Congratulations. I love my matador it really sounds great and of course the classic hardware, gotta have it. Would you be ingested in selling the conga?
Greetings BMac. How about you, would you like to sell your matador. I would really like to have at least a set of two.
Cheers.

Sorry KC, I would if I could but this may be the only complete I'll ever own. On my modest budget Volcano's, Matthew Smith's and JB's are kind of out of reach so for now it's just the old used LP'S or old Gon Bop's. Spruced up with some chrome polish and touch up markers is as good as it gets.

It's sometimes hard to find that missing third conga as I found with my set of old classics below. It's been a few years and I still haven't found the matching tumba, so for now I just use a red one I picked up on the cheap.

I'm keeping my old tumba. It sounds nice. I dropped it one time and got a nasty crack in it but I epoxied it up, you can hardly see the crack. Only I know. Shhhh. Mine is burgundy, those are more butternut. I know where the conga and quinto are too. I sold them years ago for $150 to friends. I don't mind they got a great price but it hurts a little they haven't been played since I sold them almost then years ago. They just sit there. At least they are in bags. It's a shame though ... but who knows ... maybe they will find a second life one day. Someone will get some nice vintage gear with those two.
