SONOC split

Postby congalou » Tue May 14, 2013 7:06 am

Here is a old SONOC, one split just under the plate as it's usually hapenned.

I use a long screw for this regluing, it works pretty well.

Hi,
Can you please explain more about the long screw and what is the purpose of the long screw?

Hi Mr Rumba,

Stretch the long screw put the shell out of his roundness around the plate and tighten the split.

Would you possibly want to drill a hole at the end of the crack to keep it from continuing? Or not?

Hi guys !

Thanks Expresso.

Roberthelpus, I think no, because the glue can go deep in the split with few technique, good glue and patience. And make a hole will weaken the area in the shell.

Thinking about it later I remembered that is more of a technique that is used on metal. Very different structures to be sure.

sorry I still do not understand what you are doing with the screw. Are you compressing the shell inwards in order to put glue in the crack and then letting off the pressure?Or are you using it to stop the shell going out of round in the gluing process?I am intrigued, and sorry for my dumbness as I know that you definitely know what you are doing, where as I am a mere novice at these fixing matters and what to learn from your expertise.incidentally, I looked at your website and really appreciate your documentation on all matters conga related..... you have the gift and skills and equipment for this work....a rare thing in these times.

My guess is that the long bolt prevents the shell from going out of round in the glueing process.
Additionally, ther ewas a crack just through the holes of the sideplate area, and thus the
screw with its washers on both sides helped to keep the shell parts even.
Again, just my guess, Congalou will chime in with much more expertise. :)
Peace & drum

I think is the opposite. When you" Stretch the long screw ",the shell get out of round, the force is done on the inside of the shell,so the two surfaces of the crack get in contact(difficult to explai in inglish) :?

Roberthelpus : Yes, we use this technic for cymbals, it works well.

Salzfaas : No problems !! as Joaozinho said, it's pretty difficult to explain well in english.. so here is a drawing, I hope it will be more clear, tell me.
