Vintage Oak Gonbops

Postby pcastag » Tue May 07, 2013 1:44 am

Just picked these up, sitting there with their old skins and a couple of the new ones I picked up from Jaisen, real nice looking stuff, hopefully this weekend I'll get a chance to skin these and my vintage pallisades park. These babies have some scuffs, but NO CRACKS! I know folks love those old rootsy phillipino mahogany gon bops, but the oaks to me are the best sounding and most durable. Canst wait to get em cleaned up and reskinned. Quinto and requinto.

50 years of debate, "What is better, Gon Bops mahogany or Gon Bops oak?" Great debate with no answer only preferences. One thing is clear, either is better than all the rest!

Nice ones!

I've had all makes and models of Gon Bops and I think the ones you just got are the best. Nice score.

If those are 9.75 and 10.5 I have the same set. I bought them in Boston in 1975 after playing with Mike "Mr. Rumba" Pluznick in Portland, Maine. He had the 41 series w/teardrop rims and epoxy finish. I fell in love with the drums and went to a drum shop in Boston and bought 'em. I sold them to a friend in 1985 to buy some new Valjes. Sold the Valjes to buy some DelCielos. Three years ago I bought back the GBs from my amigo and rebuilt the 10.5 inch, added an alma and and Confer head and had Matthew make 2 stainless bands. I'm going to put a thick steer head on the requinto and sell the set. I only play my Ritmos these days.
