What size do You usually use?

Postby Espresso » Fri May 03, 2013 9:01 pm

Hi congueros
I would place the following question: what size of congas do You usually use ?
I ask this because all we know that the main drum should be conga with size around 11,75 and tumba around 12,5 , more drum of the set should be smaller to quinto or bigger to lower.
But I find a lot of second hand congas set composed mainly of quinto and conga as size , and also a several master conguero that use the quinto as main drum.

Also I ask : Why this difference between rule and reality ? May be quinto is easyer to get slap ? May be quinto can meet easyer solo and accompanying part ?
I do not think it is due to economical reason.
Thank to reply.
Bye

To be honest: different ones , in my funk band
I like the nice contrast of an 11" quinto & 12.5 tumba,
whereas the 11.75 and 12.5" combo is very appropiate for
what you might call the traditional setup.
But then, what is traditional, especially when it comes to multi-drum conga setups...

Apart from those questionable and often rather cheap quinto & conga combinations
you find in commercial ads which might reflect the lack of knowledge of the seller:
In an eclectic, not purely traditional rumba world anything goes and yes,
many master congueros have a quinto at the center of their setup, like
Angá had in his 5-drum setup. Nothing wrong with that at all!

Maybe, yes.
Many will say that you should learn how to perform slaps an 11.75"
first before you move on to a quinto.
Honestly, that is not how I had done it when I started playing congas,
but it makes sense to me.

And last but not least, it is not alway about sizes, but sound of different
skins as well, for example a rather low tuned set of conga and tumba
can be very cool t emulate the sound of old school recordings.
Peace & drum

Hi Mike , thank to Your interesting reply.
Me too have a quinto as main drum , this my choice is more related because I am a self taugh and I never had a traditonal teaching. Of course about easier slaping it is related to me and not to great master , especially to roll patterns fully slap.
When I told that a lot of second hand set are composed of quinto and conga , it indicates that this trend is more common since several years , this is only a my observation and not any more.
I have another consideration : I always have found difficulties to obtain a good sound from the conga placed on my left as segunda and tuned to G# , may be this size is more suitable to higher tuning like C right of conga.
Thank You
Auf Wiedersehen
