Postby Jaisen Torres » Thu May 02, 2013 3:38 am

I have had this beautiful set sitting in boxes at home for a while now, I played them for a good two hours today , oh wow they sound so clean & project really hard .
The set consists of a conga , tumba & super tumba wich they aint even making anymore.
They have a fresh mounted set of skins , chrome hardware , I love them.
I wana cop me a quinto & requinto in this series really soon ...

Is there a hidden message? Is that lighter fluid next to them?

Not to bud in , but I think all Alex Acunas are made of North American Ash, and these are the " Special Edition" models.

There Ash Wood , I personally like the ash over the Oak Wood , as far as the new models. These Gon Bops sound so melodic , yet surprisingly they project really hard.

Hey Will ,I will call you in a bit ,sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday , had a crazy day.

Love the look of those congas!!! I do have one major gripe with Gon Bops, especially the bongos. I had a pair of Alex Acunas, good wood and great rims. Great sound! Only problem, tuning lugs...Too thin, started losing their shape with not much tension (this with a Fiberskyn head btw). Traded it and soon after he tells me those lugs aint worth %/&-!! Practically straightened out!! A pity, otherwise they'd be top of the list for me..btw the guy I traded it to wrote to Gon Bops to report what had happened, never got an answer...:-\

It seems to me that ash wood for congas is a relatively newer phenomena. Is that the case?

When I think of ash I think of Fender Telecasters. I don't think we'll be seeing any guitars made out of rubber wood soon but who's going to come up with the Les Paul of congas? Mahogany with a flame maple top. :D Sunburst finish or goldtop options of course.

Basswood is the popular (light weight) thing for "shredder" guitars. Baswood congas with some kind of Floyd Rose pitch manipulation shredder congas anyone?

This is one of the main gripes that Akbar had with the new Gon Bops after they bought his company. They sent off to Thailand for those mass produced thinner metal parts. Akbar's own metal work consisted of huge cold rolled steel that weighs a ton, but lasts forever.

I've had lots of the new congas, ca series, acuna s both black and natural, never had a problem with the hardware, nor have I heard of any on the congas. I could see it being a problem with the bongos , especially how some folks crank the macho these days.

No. Skin on Skin has been making ash congas at least since the 70s.

Jay told me once that Giovani came to his shop and played his ash drums and then took the wood choice to LP for his sponsored line.

The ash conga I have from Jay is a very, very sweet drum!
