Fine looking congas. Can't wait to hear them played.
Anyone notice LP didn't use the top-down tuning system on these new drums?

The new LP sound platforms look pretty good.

I have never had problems with the regular LP hardware as
far as bending it or anything like that. After all these years
never had hardware failure on any of my LP drums. As a matter
of fact if I were to take a drum like to the park and places like
that it would be something like an LP Classic II or Performer, those
are 2 ply drums with regular hardware, do not weigh a lot and if
you know what you doing they sound good. But I know there is people
that may not have a good idea what they are doing and some how
manage to damage the hardware. Check the hoops on this set of
bongos, (wavy enough for you).Misuse and Abuse!

Hi all, I’m somewhat new here but I couldn’t help noticing all the negatives and no one has actually played them. Maybe there is a positive like most other materials on earth; maybe the softer wood will help prevent splits and cracks from extreme temperatures and falls. You never know, they may just sound nice, they sure look nice. Give it some time and I bet LP will have someone like Samuel Torres making them sing sweet rhythms on youtube. I’m just saying.

But then again is not the arrow, is the indian.
Apollo, what would you say is a good reason for
anybody to buy this new durian wood drums?
What set these drums apart from the Gon Bops
Mariano series made out of durian wood too?

Here is the one of the true Grand Masters
of the drum, the incomparable Candido Camero
on them new durian drums.

All due respect to Candido, but not exactly a fair demonstration of the drums sound. As expected with his senior age, the tones aren't exactly what they should be, along with questionable tuning.
I'm sure they are a fine drum, not like LP make poor drums guys. They are up in the high range drums.

I do not have any problems with LP, I grew-up
with LP and those are the drums I prefer.

Here are some younger lions playing them drums.
One of them kind of look like the bother from
Israel that post every now and then here and is
a great player.

George Padilla on this one:

After listening to all the videos still not sold
on them drums. Let say for instance If I have
a set of Classics already why do need to
dump the Classics and buy a set of these?
That's what I want to know. Perhaps that
according to LP they are 25% lighter, that
could be a great selling point for those that
carry their drums to their gigs. What else?
What other advantages to these drum? This
is not negativity, but if I were in the market
for a drum I will try to get all the information
I can on the drums so I can make an informed
decision.

Wow! Thank you for that! That was beautiful! How old is Candido now, late 80s? he still has rhythm! I agree Ritmo, he is the Grand Master and still looks good! As far a good reason for anybody to buy this new durian wood drums or what set these drums apart from the Gon Bops Mariano series I really cannot say do to I have never seen them in person or played them, but they both sound pretty good on video and look nice too!. What might make me buy either one or both is a killer deal.

Candido Camero is 92 and I can only hope
is I get to live to be 92 I can do what he is
doing on them drums, a true role model
in my book. Candido always had his own
sound and style of playing which involves
using his (articulating) fingers (they do
not call him " Thousand Finger Man" for
nothing).

Good point a killer deal is a pretty
good reason to buy the drums.

Respect! Nice link! It's not often you get to listen to old school music sensibility like this. Just a pleasure to watch and listen to :D

The new LP drums sound flat though, even with a master on them.

As I said before, all due respect to Candido, he is a legend and has well paid his dues. I pray I get to live a long life as he is doing and still doing his thing on the drum.
So as for the sound, his vid does not do true justice to the drums with his technique.

As for the other vids, surely you cannot be serious... Tippy tapping, shocking timing, poor technique and not striking the drum properly.
Might sound harsh, but it just aint being done as it should.
Before I make judgement on these new drums, I would like to see & hear them played by someone who is in a position to strike the drum at a decent volume and produce full correct tones out of them, some timing consistency would be nice too.
I know at namm you are restricted noise wise and are not permitted to go all out unless scheduled performance etc. but still...

Ive seen pics of Paoli getting busy with Diegito on these drums, surely wont be long before the vids pop up, I think that will be a fairer example of how they sound.
Theres a mix clip from LP where for a few seconds you hear Michael Spiro with Jhair jamming mid to softly and the drums begin to show how they can sound. Here - go to 1:30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcHZKBiAJ0E With some added tuning, and proper striking volume, I dont think they would sound bad at all.
Nothing revolutionary I imagine, but a fine LP drum nonetheless. Will be interesting to see how they are priced once the "new" hype of that line is over and compared to standard Classics etc equivalent of that line. Not a fan at all of that extended collar rim though, no matter what the drum.

Let me say that my original comment about Durian wood and its fruit was not meant in any way to be a negative comment about the drum.

I simply found it interesting... having had some experience with Durian fruit.

Every company is challenged in positioning its products in the marketplace. It's always easy to produce products with the highest quality materials, not so easy to produce products to meet a certain price point, and still maintain quality.

That's how you define value.

Interesting how in the past forum members are specific to comment upon the type of wood that their artisan congas are made from as it does make a difference. When I first started to learn about wood types and how they can affect the tonal quality of a conga I was indeed surprized but I really should not have been. But of course it is also the shape, the skin, the hardware and especially the person and technique.

I am happy to see production congas trying other types of wood and certainly it may very well be that Durian wood is more available now than rubber wood. I like the idea of a softer fruit wood. I bought some congas made from hard Djembe type african wood and really did not like them because of the immense overtones and ringing, eventually let them pass to a new home.

Be good to see how the LP and Gon Bops Durian wood congas stay the test of time and tone.

LP isn't the only one with a new line of congas, It looks like Tycoon Percussion just came out with a new line too. Anyone know what their called or what their made of? The most interesting thing is how warm they sound as if they were natural hide but the color looks like it may be synthetic, the color of the heads look really dark. Check em out!

A bunch of my friends attended the namm show over the past week & said these new classics in Durian Wood , sound really good.
They back in New York & I got to see some camcorder footage & they all agreed they sound good, not as strong as the Thailand Oak , but they size eachother in sound pretty much.
By the way I wanted to add that Gon Bop is really doing there thing this year.
