Postby Killak » Wed Dec 28, 2011 3:17 am

Let's not be too critical of Expert Village. You can learn a lot of good stuff there. Like this one....

That's funny cause I found those sub par videos after watching JCs videos which are really good and helpful. This one guy has like dozens of videos on all types of instruments. If anyone is bored I highly suggest you check them out. Here he is teaching how to play "shakers"... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVcitsE ... ata_player

Well, I have to say that I felt a little sorry for that guy after reading some of the comments. He seemed genuine, just not very good at what he was supposed to be teaching. But after looking at the link that Killak posted, I have a feeling that he's just spoofing.

Or he's just really, really high.

The thing is he has a series of videos where he does jazz piano and he can def. play the piano - the videos where he branches off and gets into the "coungas", "shakers" and "hip hop" drum beats are where it goes downhill quickly. I really think this guy is serious - if not then he is a comic genius - I'm sorry I can't help myself - i have to post a few more...

I guess he's for real, but I sure wouldn't label him an "expert". Although, watching him makes me feel not too bad about my playing.

Here's a link to his bio: http://jazzmenrecords.com/RyanLarson.html

Some of the compositions linked there sound okay. He needs to give up the "help" vids.

I love these two excerpts from his bio:

"Ryan holds the record for amount of free online instructional videos featured at www.expertvillage.com"

"Ryan is trained in the art of Zen Improvisation and can fit in naturally in any scenario whether it be on the city stage or in his studio performing logical, simplistic, yet lush media accompaniment."

I have to post two more - last ones i promise...

You didn't read what the video description or failed to understand it.
This video is fantastic and the guy clearly knows his stuff.
He is playing quinto patterns over Rumba-Guaguanco.

Interesting - all due respect I wouldn't describe that guys video as fantastic - his clave sounds off and his tones on the conga just dont sound right. granted im no expert and def. a beginner but a video like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOSABaDh ... re=related sounds immensely better to me.

These guys are playing straight, with heavy slaps and all notes at the same volume...result no swing. Sounds more like a marching band.
Why not search for Cubans playing Rumba if you want to get the real feel. Guarachon just uploaded 9 excellent videos from a great Ruma party, search for Rumba en Ateres.

Also check out Guaguanco Moperc no 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ-5HUyn19k

People that really want to learn pay a lot of money to go and study in Cuba, the videos they have thankfully loaded are nowhere near a substitute but at least gives a good idea.

I had the good fortune to study with Cubans in san Diego and in the Bay area for a few years and slowly beginning to get to grips with what they are putting across regarding the feel.
In a Sandy Perez, class when we are going to straight he immediately stops the whole thing and makes us start over again.

So here is an example of Guarapachangeo, #1 is by Michael Spiro who has studied with the best and played this stuff for over 30 years, a most knowledgeable and talented player and a very good teacher. #2 is by Jesus Diaz, another master.
#1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya_5kTpyt5w
#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSqwiaT2K9k

This is only a teaching situation and I am sure Spiro will have a great feel when playing for real, but this kinda illustrates what I meant.

BTW why not sign up to Congamasterclass for the introductory month and see what you think.
