Good idea(s). I had considered re-heading before I tuned her...that head is really lively! So...bongo hooks, eh? .....

Very interesting - that embedded year thing works for me on the oak drums but not the mahogany. Mine were made in 74-75 and the oaks have the gel coat. But after a few years the gel started having a lot of bubbles in it. They went back to Mariano in 83 and were refinished and new tags were put on - The new tags have 83 embedded. Conga ICL-4141 - 0105832, Quinto IQ-4141 - 0207838. But, the mahogany conga was also made in 74-75 and the tag doesn't reflect that date, ICL-3000 - 426833.

Adding several washers is a soliution for this problem as well.

If you want to keep the original head, perhaps,
but it is not the most aesthetically pleasing solution in my opinion.
I´d go for shorter tuning lugs.

Hey Paul, nice lineup! If there was gelcoat there shouldn't be any missing spots from leg wear. Unless maybe the player was an incontinent nudist! Try some lacquer thinner on a q-tip. If it softens the finish it's lacquer. If not, it's probably gelcoat. Buck

Nice drum! As far as the lugs you can get a 5/16 spacer chrome plated about a 1/2 inch. For some reason Gon Bop's mounted those plate's too high thus when the skin stretch's the lug's will run out of thread. Here is my 10.5 Quinto that i brought from Manny's music in N.Y.C in the late 70's new for $200.00 buck's. I believe 1978.I mounted a new skin from Matt and still the lug's are running out of room.So get spacer's

Ah thank you my friend. This is what I love about this joint; so many diverse, and informative responses.
I warmed her up a bit today...SWEET! I'm keeping that skin. no reason not to.

BTW-The family portrait in beginning of post; the Meinl, 2nd from right, may be available for trades or sale to interested parties. She has a story. Great to play, but as Bucko so eloquently stated, I am "conga promiscuous".

Glad you didn't rush into reskinning it, those nice earthy tones from a well settled skin can take a while to get back. I was too hasty a couple of times in the past when I got a new used drum, it can be tempting to slap a bright new skin on right away just to brighten the look up. It's all about the sound now (and of course always should have been!).
