Hi CD,

I got hold of one about two years ago for a try out, but couldnt afford it then-£1800. Fantastic instrument for 'tripping out'.

The guy in Switzerland is only hand making them to order now and you have to go there to order it, I guess so he can check you out.

I saw one on ebay recently which was £2500 and rising, I dont know the final price, but there is one on US ebay for $8000 'buy now' but I did notice it was being sold from Thailand-caviat emptor (buyer beware)!

I've seen and heard a hippy kid on Haight st. play one of these. Sounded really cool, he had people listening for 1/2 a block around.

Really different sound, very nice, I don't know if he went to Switzerland to get it, but you never know.

I hope the hippy kid had good insurance on his drum.
The story has it that the maker used to produce them and export them, but the strain of tuning them by hand and ear gave him a nervous breakdown. So now he does them by commission only. He will tune them to any key you want.

So now they are becoming as rare as rocking horse sh*t.

I don't remember the hang drum having that wood horn, does it?
Could be a a past apprentice making those? 850 euros isn't cheap.
As they are from Germany there could be some affiliation, or could be
someone taking advantage of the fact that the originator of the hang drum
is'nt producing as many as before.
