I own a Junior 9 inch re-quinto...and have heard that term since the 60's in New York city...not many can play my re-quinto either, you really have to adjust to the head size...but it sounds Great!..Thank you Junior...BTW my re-quinto is over 40 years old now...

Requintos in my country were mainly used in "comparsas". A tumbadora 9" or less is considered a requinto in Cuba. In a comparsa, the requinto is hung from the neck and shoulders and is played by soloing on the rumba, as the comparsa moves along, by the "repicador" or "quinto mayor", both terms can be used.

I was just saying in my experience i never heard the term used in cuba from any of the rumberos either when playing rumba or comparsa etc . It sure exists though , i have a 10 inch drum which is a quinto so whats the difference between that and a requinto ?

I've heard the term requinto applied to a part in Comparsa too by Sandy Perez, however it refers to a part in the rhythm which is not the highest pitched drum and so probably not the smallest drum.

My requintos have got "bellys".

I use these drums exclusively for soloing in rumba.

From what I understand during the rumba colombia often times a very small 8-9 inch drum is played. Perhaps this is the re-quinto.
Regardless, who cares, what's in a name, it's all about the sound and what is played.

Belly and 9" Requinto (or whatever you may call it)?

Here is the 9" Patato that I once owned, it had a pretty wide belly
and a very narrow bottom.

Sold it because I did not get along with that narrow playing surface.
10" is OK for me though, but not 9".

Leedy, the pics congamyk has posted are requinto, the Isla, i know for a fact is 9" or 9 and something... Pics are deceiving in how they appear, but congamyk does own a few requintos. Big belly on them, not typically seen.
Even the 9.75" Matthew Smith has made for me has quite the belly.

Yeah, they don't make a 9 anymore, now they're all 9.75.

I said earlier in this thread that I have a "fat" tumba with an 11 inch head. It is a tumba because it sounds like a tumba - deeper and with more bass then many drums with a 12 1/2 head. I also have a quinto with a 9 3/4 inch head. Not a requinto - a quinto. Why? because it sounds like a quinto not like what a requinto sounds like. Sound guys - sound. Not head size. Sometimes they go together - sometimes not.
