If you don't mind me asking how did you come up with the dimension of the frame you built the barrel around?

GD,

The dimensions for the frame I made were 14" in diameter top and bottom and about 22" in height.

Hope this helps!!!

Jorge,

I am in the Chicago area. Can you share wirth me contact information for Angel Fuentes? I would like to build bass hand percussion out of barrels too. Locally we have a distillery in my town and I will investigate barrel options here.

Thanks,

Jerry

Jorge,

Wow! Thank you for opening my eyes to this. This is an incredible resource. I did not realize this existed right in my backyard. I am definitely going to check this out and I will humbly support this with my $$. I will attend to listen and learn.

I am not a hardcore traditionalist but I see the value of preserving tradition. This is refreshing to see in this age of Rap and DJs taking over. (I mean this respectfully) I am of British/Irish decent and I have previously thought that much of the Latino has abandoned their traditional music and a significant portion of this tradition has been supported by non-Latinos. (I hope I am wrong here and/or there is a positive change) I personally believe to know where you are going is dependent on knowing where you have been. (In a historical sense)

I have seen a similar community to the Bomba community with Samba Schools. As for performing groups, among the most successful I have seen is the Chicago Samba School (now Chicago Samba). The whole Brazilian community comes out and supports this and this is a regular social event. I hope that the Puerto Rican community supports this Bomba community.

Again this is refreshing, informational and inspirational. The inspirational is the most vital. There is a deficit of inspiration in our communities and these Bomba groups and similar groups are a great asset for achieving a community that is in touch with its roots.

Respectfully,

Jerry

Willie,

Neat lookin' barrels but they look like pine or some other soft wood. They may work for low tension Bass but they would not hold up well (possibly) to higher tension tuning. The whole Bomba thing looks so cool and I plan to check out the Bomba scene in Chicago soon.

Enjoy Drums and drumming

Hi Willie,

Yes, those wine barrells currently for auction look like pine wood to me.

Maybe they will work fine with "torniquete" style tuning on them, (where there is no much tension on the shells per se), but in my humble opinion pine wood is to fragile to hold on steel hardware.

Hi Congaplace,

Below is the Bomba drum (Buleador) demo for those of you who asked how the drum sound.

On the videoclip I'm playing some basic "Seises": Sicá, Yubá, Corvé and Holandé followed by some "repiques".

Very minimal tuning on it for this demo, although can still get some nice "Primo repiques" sounds from it.

Drum can go higher than on clip.

Hope you like it!!!

"Cuero de Chivo" on that drum. The drums sounds like is right on the money because you do not want it to sound like a conga drum. Good Job!
