Awful dilema!

Some of you might know that I have some Timba drums for sale. A quinto, two congas, a tumba and a super tumba.

Yesterday, someone offered me to purchase the whole set. But I wanted to save the quinto, a conga and the tumba for me. Now I might end up with some cash (I am selling another set of drums and my current set too) and no drums. If I close the deal, I will need to buy a new set. Money will not be an issue, but now I will have to go "mainstream" with my choice!

So, LP, Meinl etc, what to get? I wanted to get some new Finnish percussion, but they seem to be out of business.

I have to admit that I like the Floatune look, but I never played them before same for the Meinl Fibercraft... the Galaxy, Palladium look great too, but pfffff LP again!

Anyone has a hint!
I might just keep the Timba for myself (it will only cost me 400€ for the 5 drums once I sell all the other drums I have, but I will not be using the extra conga and the super tumba).

Thanks in advance.

If you like the Timbas keep them. You might find a use for the two drums you don't use now
later on. Or you might find a buyer for those two drums at some other time.

The mainstream drums you can buy at anytime. The Timba will not always be available
like LP's and Meinl's are.

I would second BnB, especially at 400€ only, that Timba deal is great!

Yes, that's more or less what I thought.

I still would love to sell the super tumba and extra conga (even if I can use the second conga tuned differently than the other one).

Thanks for your input!

Anyone played on the floatune?

In all seriousness, I would sell all the drums. I simply would not put my money on the Timba drums.
End of the day, its your decision, do what makes you happy.

Regards to Meinl, the old stuff they once made I dig, their new range, nothing like their old stuff. Id stay clear also.

If you are thinking mainstream, you cant go passed a set of LP Classics. Great drums, just make sure you can select the best skins available for them, I have some great LP heads I selected for my Classics and they sound great. I do have a mule skin on my Giovanni Conga which I use as my main drum in place of a quinto. (I feel a quinto has no place in a 'marcha' type situation.)

A student of mine recently purchased some LP Eddie Montalvo series congas, they are basically dressed up Classics. Identical pretty much. Very well built and great sound.

Thanks for your input Abakua. And congrats by the way.

When it comes to heads, I have a great supplier, I like to play on thick skins and I know where to find them.

Also, I do not feel like paying big bucks for mainstream instruments... the classic sound good, but there is an after taste of not enough to me...

I will see what I do...

I'm with Abakua on this one I read Timba's warranty section and the way they word their warranty it's almost as if they are really not going to honor anything. I have also heard about cracking issues. I don't know kind of scares me away from Timba congas.

On the other hand, if those Timbas have come along this far with no issues they
are probably just fine.

I am waiting to actually see them.

The guy who's selling them should be back soon.

I hope they were bought before 2007... It seems that problems occur on models built before this date

I own 5 timbas and love them HOWEVER I will never deal with that company ever again. As a matter of fact I dont believe they making any more drums.Besides being WAY over priced ,trying to get any service on warranty issues or parts is impossible ,again they are looking to grab you!Stay away from them !But ,used ones that have weathered the years, why not,if the price is right.
An example of their BS,;I sent a money order for a flesh hoop (am embarassed to say how much) 2 weeks no hoop,3 weeks no hoop.I call. She(the rep)tells me it was sent!I wait longer. It finally arrives, shipped 2 days AFTER I called and complained !Nice ,huh ? I definitely believe all the storys of this shady company.(or rather the woman who presently runs the company )
