Good lookin out on this one! I salivated just thinking of playing this on my home theater system, lol! This sounds like it'll definitely be a gem. Btw, the conguero, Joey De Leon, is a great percussionist. I've seen him with Poncho Sanchez several times on bongos but I've also seen him play tambores. Very impressive.

Yeah its should be a good one, a long time wait for Orestes !!

I saw Joey w/ Poncho too. On bongos, but he did play tambores on one tune. Just timbao for backing up the Poncho "showcase" of course. Joey does have the pyrotechniques in repetoire, which I don't really strive for, so anticipating to see the "real stuff". We will see!

Well, I finally got the CD mi pana !!

Great work and good choices of repertoire.

Johnny "Dandy" is on 4 cuts and makes it complete.

Rebecca Mauleon makes a killer solo on the only 1 track she is on followed by a killer solo by Orestes !! Somehow it feels like he's nervous ? Great nonetheless !!

The whole CD is amazing. Orestes is the best timbalero on the planet and one of the best bongoceros. Dandy has been on top for over 30 yrs. The sonero , Adonis Puentes, is also very good, "muy callejero", streetwise, which is the #1 attribute for a good sonero. Definitely album of the year candidate. Tremendo afinque!

You are a man of strong convictions, Dario. Although I would never in my life utter such a statement, I don't see why I should object in this particular case. People like Orestes will always stand like the Untouchables among the most amazing new superdrummers. He never plays a wrong note.

Nice CD, thanks for the heads up. So far I'm really digging La Mulata Rumbera, Las Boinas De Cachao, and Remembering Ray. I gotta say its good all around though.
Is Carlos del Puerto jr. the son of the bass player from Irakere by the same name? He did a nice job on upright, as well as everyone else of course.

In 1980 Orestes returned to Cuba (his homeland) for a visit. During the short visit he gave clinics on timbal, he sat in with the likes of Pello El Afrokan. Cuba had turned its back on timbal and bongo' during the mid 60's and throughout the 70's, stating: "el timbal y el bongo' estan fuera de moda", (timbales and bongos are outdated and old fashion). These clinics held in Cuba by Orestes and subsequently by Nicky Marrero, were the determining factor in bringing back the timbal and bongo' to the spotlight in Cuban music. There is a video of Changuito, Amadito Valdes and Emilio Del Monte giving Oretses the credit for reviving the interest of the timbal in Cuba. These guys subsequently made the transition from trap set to timbales and Orestes was the man responsible.

One of my favourites, followed closely by Ralph Irizarry (his work with timbalaye was amazing) anyway there is a CD called "Cuba L.A" with Orestes on timbal, Luis Conte on congas, Michito Sanchez on bongo, Carlos del Puero Jnr on bass, and other greats, on the first track 'El Dulcerito' Orestes performs one of the all time best timbale solos ever. It is my personal favourite solo on timbal, also does a killer solo in the last track 'Sandunga-Mandinga-Mondongo'.

Cant wait to get this latest CD.

Speaking about personal preference, I agree with you. In my opinion however, Ralph Irizarry belongs more to the "new breed" of drummers, relying rather on modern rhythmic concepts than either on, what I call the "Quinto concept", or on the Charanga/Danzón school, although I'm sure he can cover that, too. But of all the modern guys out there, Ralph is my favorite.

Nicky Marrero, yeah! - Check out his solo voice on "Repicao" by Don Gonzalo Fernandez. Or his time-keeping with Palmieri ("Nada de ti"). He lived in Hamburg once for a short period. He always held Orestes in great respect.

I also like Jimmy Delgado. Manny Oquendo is another big favorite of mine. And all of these timbaleros are accomplished bongo players as well!

That's why I would always be reluctant to call any one "the best timbalero on the planet".
