Nice one! Aspirina fam got some big respect in Havana, legacy goes way back.
I was fortunate to spend some time with Aspirina senior while they were in Syd. with Bar de Buena Vista, played rumba all day n night with them :) Also got to catch up with Adonis n crew while in Havana, some very talented brothers. That clip was while they were doing a series of workshops in Europe where Aspirinas grand daughter lives with her husband Chris (who shot all the clips)

Here is a clip from Saturday night. A local music enthusiast put the clip together. I had a gig on congas with 13 piece project called El Orqueston de Tina, we cover music from Los Van Van, Reve, Pupy, Havana D'Primera, Sur Caribe, Dan Den, and more. In between the sets we performed a rumba to break up the night.
Here is "Maria Belen" a Yambu, we perform a version covered by Yoruba Andabo (originally played on cajon and with son clave) we felt it sounded more melodic and 'full' on congas and with rumba clave. We got one rehearsal in a few days before the show.
Im on Quinto. (Matt Smith requinto) my bro Tonio on Salidor (my Cuban hand made solid shell super tumba) and Adrian on Tres Golpes (my LP Gio conga with mule skin)
Fabian on lead vocals is actually a drummer/timbalero who stepped up last minute to cover lead vocals after our original guy had to pull out last minute.

There was also a Guaguanco done, footage aint up yet.

your quinto playing is right in the pocket no overplaying,
no rushing or anything.

Is there a big cuban community in Australia?

Hey Ritmo, thanks man. Glad you dug it.
Not really a big a community, most are ex professional dancers/musicians who stayed while on tour, or ex pro athletes who defected while the Syd Olympics were on in 2000, a few others which married and came here.
I wouldnt say a big community, its kinda small but united. Heaps of Sth & Central Americans.

EDITUS from Costa Rica.

Yes!

Is that a particular rythmn the conga player is playing?
I'd like to learn to play that, or something like that.

If I were to refer to that tempo? time signature? How would I refer to it?

I hope I'm hi-jacking here.

New guy.

He is playing SONGO rhythm on 3 congas. The song is up tempo, so SONGO would be the application. TUMBAO would not work because the tune is very upbeat.

I concur with Omelenko..it is a 'variation' of the rhythm Songo created by "Changuito"...there are at least 9 variations of Songo...Songo has kinda gone by the way side like the rhythm "Chaonda"..created by the cello player of Orch. Aragon...rhythms like these weren't 'dance' rhythms...so they didn't last very long, usage wise...who here is familiar with the rhythm Chaonda?... If you have never seen it or heard it played I can put a video of me playing it..but the problem is having the cascara part and the bell part to be played in order to hear it the way it's supposed to sound..

I found a video of Chaonda by Aragon here it is....
http://youtu.be/UjOYOfrKZhg

the conga player also plays Guaguanco and other tumbao patterns but in the beginning he plays the Chaonda pattern...and then when the flute comes in he goes into another pattern....it's kinda convoluted with all the patterns the conga player is playing but these are variations on a 'rhythmic' theme...

Here's another version of the same Ritmo tune, there used to be some great videos of them posted but they got pulled by youtube.

For 440, one of the reasons the rhythms sound so different with Rtmo oriental and Van Van is that they came out of the charanga tradition, that's also why you hear the flute and strings so prevalent in their music. The timbalero for ritmo Daniel Diaz was quite the innovator at the time, he played cowbell with his foot and you will also hear lots of snare rides in his patterns. One of my favorite cuban groups of all time for sure. You'll also probably notice in both van van and ritmo that there is no bongocero.

Hey , it may be not be most people's thing here, but you gotta give it to the dc guys for bringing percussion back in as an essential part of the groove. Can't play go-go without them coongas!

Here's the full video. Someone show these guys how to slap a drum please!

Extreme style ..I don't recommend it(using their technique, that is)...and as far as i can see, limited to only one form of music/rhythm/beat...but entertaining none the less...GO GO GO!...
