Have you ever talked to a surfer that said he was going to leave and go live on a beach and just surf? I had a friend do just that he left for a year and just lived on the beach no job or anything and surfed all year in hawaii! I was thinking how cool it would be if I could do the same with music. Just leave and totally immerse myself in music and learning to play conga the way i would like. But hey just dreaming I have to work :(

Brother Vinnie, It is possible ; see if you can find a credible education establishment that has a conga teacher. Then apply for an educational grant through the state.
Or may be JC would take you in , you probably will have to move to Seattle a cool city, cook for the man, launder his clothes, ( give his wife a break ) run all over town doing his errands, clean and vacuum the house, mantain his gear, cut the grass, wash his car,( wax off , wax on) be his personal roady. and catch fish off Puget Sound. Hell thinking about it , I take you in as an apprentice and I am closer here in Tampa. :D :D

You can always do like I did in 2003 - work and save your money and just go.

For a big part of that year I did a round world trip with the main purpose of studying percussion. I had some contacts in Africa and no contacts in Cuba, but everything fell into place as far as meeting the right people to study with (even met Changuito!). Also visited Germany, Crete, Mexico, LA, Hawaii and Sydney. The trip took my playing up another level.

It was the best of times and... sometimes it was the worst. I had so many crazy adventures and experiences you wouldn't believe it.
That trip had practically everything, you name it.

There is much to recommend it, just don't get sick in West Africa!

p.s. In early Jan 2006 I posted a story and a lot of pics from Ghana, West Africa here on Congaboard titled "La Rumba in Africa'

p.p.s. Vinnie is right - there are so many hot cuban women!
