I've been on here before but I want to introduce myself. I'm Luis & I live in northern Florida where the weather is great but the latin music scene isn't so great. I'm what they call a Newyorican from the Bronx, & lived there during the 60's & early 70's so I know of the latin music that some have you (JC, Isaac etc) speak of...great music. My father & gandfather played timbales & percussions with a few small conjuntos in the 40's & 50's so i've been in love with drumming since my first drumset when I was 6 years old. Those were great times man! Well fast forward a few years, marriages, kid & the Army & I find myself in love with la conga, not for the first time but, never really focused on them until now. I've ordered a set of Islas from Mario, after finding this forum & quickly returned the Pearl Primero Pro 10 & 11 inch set to the store before the the 30 days ran out. I can't wait for them to get here! I'm going nuts! Thank you all for this forum & for sharing what you know. If you're ever in town, look me up!

Welcome Luis . I intend t come over to florida in October this year . I will be looking to have a lesson or 2 with anyone you can recomend or anyone else on here for that matter . sorry for jacking the thread man.

Hey Paqui...Not sure about Fredericksburg, but then again, this is just the first week of my musical journey so there is much to I still need to find out.

From what I have seen so far it seems the majority of conqueros are in Washington, D.C.

One thing you might want to do is place an ad in Craigslist Richmond and see if anyone is also looking.

Not sure if I can contrivute anything to you right now but I am always willing to try/learn so if you want to get together let me know.

A third option is to plan a trip to DC for a day if we find an experienced conguero there. I have a lead on a teacher in Maryland, have sent a message, and am waiting for a reply.

Welcome to this invaluble place we call the CONGAPLACE. a lot of information here. and the brotherhood here second to none.
all the brothers are very respectful and very helpful.
if any of you guys are looking for someone to help you with a lesson or two, I think JC does webcam lessons, of course for a small fee if youre interested you might want to send him a private message. if you havent already done so a good instructional DVD is a great way to start. one of the best instructional DVD's in my opinions is
BOBBY SANABRIA's Getting started on congas.
its a progressive 3 dvd set. do not skip any of them. start with one and work through the third. dont get impatient, even those that have been playing for 30 years still practice. the music you make will be all the rewared youll ever need.

I'm in Central florida (lakeland) where there is not much latin music going on (except in the churches where i play). The tampa community radio station 88.5 WMNF has a latin jazz/tropical salsa show on saturday afternoons. I have not checked their website, but maybe they have streaming. You should look them up and listen to the show if possible. the DJ's are bilingual so it's great for gringos like me.
