hola,
anyone know of a good mozambique solo to check out. If possible as a
single conguero in latin jazz setting, not emsemble? Usually a timbalero takes the solo, but I could'nt find many with a conguero soloing.

ideas?

If not already done so, attempt to find some Pello El Afrokan recordings. Plenty of tumbadora solos.

Also, Raul Rekow from Santana line up is featured in a few videos and recordings playing an open mozambique pattern in a few tunes where he opens up a fair bit and also takes some solos.

The DVD I saw the other day "supernatural" has him doing the above mentioned also.

But in the Pello El Afrokan recordings I have, there is plenty for you to go through. See how you go

If u want to hear some "smokin" solos listen to "ONE DRUM" Tommy Lopez on "Mambo con Conga=Mozambique by Eddie Plamieri and his other "smokin" album Molasses.... Tommy was a bad MoFo.......they are classic recording today, and the solos are great!...."JC" Johnny Conga....

It is not difficult for anybody which have been lead player,for the record,the one doing solos with Pello El Afrocan's band was Nico,Pello's lead tumbador,he even would use a clave hitting the congas on the side,(specially in Maria Caracoles) his favor song.

In addition to molasses check out Eddie's ablum titled just that, Mozambique! Some good stuff there, to!

I love Manny's timbale solos as well! Sorry, don't mean to get off the topic of conga soloing...

The band I'm in is going to play this, we have rehearsed it 2 times. The "trap drummer" wants me to solo -which is actually a timbalero solo.

Pls check out the tune. The lead sheet that we bought from Mitch Frohman says its a Mozambique. Is this a new style or did Jorge delgado come up with his own thing?

Ideas for solo?

Listened to the track there Tonio,, and Jeeze! Good luck if you guys are playing it at that speed!! Whew!

Sounds like the Mozambique bell, but the clave plays a 2/3 clave starting on the one, rather than the 3/2 that plays around the one.

Thanks for checking it out!! Yup its a speedy one. It is a mozambique as the sheet and you have noticed on the timbales/bells.

But listen to the tumbadoras. It has a mozambique conotation, but its broken up hmm it must be the down beat difference you mentioned on the one. Maybe that's why it sounds like the conga pattern does not seem right?

JC, Z or anyone else , please help me out here. Been wrestlng this one.
I can muster the pattern that Jorge(George) Delgado is doing but want to
analyze this tune> then I can think about the solo:)

Well, back to the bell,, they hit a double going into the one, which is a cool fancy way to play it - somebody has really flexible hands to do that at break-neck bpms!
Oh, wait a minute,, isn't that Cascara??

The clave is backwards, the bass is playing right on the bomba - which is where he should be.
After listening to the beginning section where you hear the congas the best,, it sure sounds like Guaguanco to me!
The Salidor sometimes hits a quick double and it's right before the one. The tres-dos does a tone just before the third hit of clave.

Now I'm really confused... :p
