It´s Carlos "Patato" Valdes. Great man! I mean great in conga playing, not in actual size.. ;)

Soul Burst by who? If it is "Cachao y su Descarga Cubana" the tumbador is Tata Güines.

Never mind! I thought this was a compilation CD or so.
It is Carl Tjader's Soul Burst. The tumbador is Carlos "Patato" Valdes.

Thanks, Tamb! Also, your right he is a great man not in stature. :D I'm trying to build up my Cal Tjader collection. I'm absolutely in love with this track. Patato is a monster on the congas in this track.

Yes, cheers, RayB, it´s awesome playing by Patato in this tune, but the reason why I also like the tune in general is the perfect balance of heavenly flutes, the piano chords (fourths!) and the down-to-earth drumming+bass..
If you´re into Carl Tjader, you should also check out his tune "INSIGHT" on the album Sona Libre (already discussed earlier: the Conga-solo by Bill Fitch!)

Yes, you are correct. The flute and piano playing goes well with the drumming. It's a HOTTTTT track!! I definitely a Cal Tjader fan! Really, the "Insight" track is that good? I must pick up that the "Sona Libre" cd. Thanks man. :D

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing good. Speaking of Cal
Tjader, there's this cd I picked up titled "Cal Tjader's Latin
Concert" recorded at the "Blackhawk" in San Francisco
September of 1958. It has a young Mongo Santamaria on
congas and Willie Bobo playing timbales and drums. If my
ears don't deceive me there's one track called "Tu crees
que?" with Mongo playing bongos. In my opinion this is an
awesome cd through and through. I enjoyed every track.
If anyone has heard it, let me know what you thought of
it. This was just my $0.02.
Take care people.-nasaisgramps :D

The Tjader, Mongo, Bobo combo (along with Paul Horn, Lonnie Hewitt and Al McKibbon) recorded a lot of stuff. I particularly like the Concerts by the Sea. You can get it on CD as "The Monterey Concerts" which is basically a compilation of two LP's.

This disk includes a cool vibe oriented "Afro Blue", Tu Crees Que, A Night in Tunisia, and many others. This is one of my favorite albums in the genre. Although I can't think of a Tjader album that I've heard and don't like, this is my favorite.

As far as I can see 'Sona Libre' is unavailable as a new CD in both the US and the UK - very annoying since people rate it so highly! If anyone knows of a copy on CD or vinyl at a reasonable price please tell me.

Yes Descarga Cubana is fantastic - I love the way that Patato has taken his tumba right down deep for that track. Those melodic phrases at the beginning are simple yet so artful, too!

For all Cal Tjader fans, checkout the "Black Orchid" & "Latino" cd. Excellent cd's to add to the collection.
