This is one of the most genuine sounding congas de comparsa I have found on YouTube, they have the right feeling. The quinto player doesn't get that much tone out of his quinto, his secos could be more distinct, but he makes the rhythm swing and they make the dancers dance. The bombo player is using the technique you would use on a floor tom, with his muffling hand on the top skin not the bottom.
It's not about the drum.

I just noticed in a comment on the kids' conga video that the bombo player is Adonis Panter Calderon and the quinto player is Lucumi, in their younger days, playing on cans and pots. Adonis became the musical director of Yoruba Andabo. Tata Guines started out on cans and pots too. Makes the point even stronger that its not about the drum.
