A friend of mine had this gourd laying around. When I asked him about it, he said he had grown it a few years back - as he had become quite interested in growing different gourds. As it turns out, he gifted it to me and now I am working on a new shekere.

I wish it sat upright, but it doesn't. Haven't gotten around to stringing it yet, just finished cleaning it out, adding poly to the inner cavity, and putting adding danish oil to the outside.

Slow, but steady progress. Still have a lot to learn, but it is coming out a lot better than the first one.

That is a tricky and demanding beading pattern you are attempting. Good luck. I hope it comes out looking and sounding great.

Thanks Bongosnotbombs, it is cumbersome, but I like it...

Well done! I also like the gourd - very nice stain. :)

Still working on it, it was stained with Tung Oil - a few coats.

Getting close to the bottom, and starting to think about the final ring - that seems like the most difficult part to me.

Thanks for the feed back.

Sounds okay. Not too loud and produces a solid bass tone.

I got to work on my technique, that was the purpose of me making one. Started practicing hold the beat to a few orisha songs.

I don't know what kind of string your using but the BEST is 'waxed fishing line" 35 pound weight...this will not break or shred...and I have chekeres that i made over 30 years ago and the string is still holding up after all these years..beading is a bit tricky but so is the knotting...I can make a chekere now in about 4 hours...and an Agbe(large gourd) takes me about 4 days...also the weight of the beads on the "skirt"/gourd is also important of course, the more beads the heavier the sound, the less beads the lighter the sound...have fun!...
