The Rebitere-a new instrument

Postby bongosnotbombs » Mon Jun 29, 2009 5:15 pm

A friend of mine came across a video of a famous Brasilian musician on a Brasilian
late night talk show. Anyways, this musician was famous for the pandeiro and gave a demonstration.

Later he pulls out this metal bucket with screws attached to it and starts playing that, which the audience thought was really funny. My friend fell in love with the idea and since I had made him a shekere and had the tools he asked me to give him a hand.

So we used a one gallon paint can which gives a great sound when the bottom is struck, kind of a metallic "prang". I think he's is going to be experimenting with muffling it a bit. The screws give a lovely shaking sound, which changes depending on the direction you shake it.

It was a fun project and ended up really well in a nice little instrument. Kind of a cross between a shekere and a pandeiro. Took about an hour to make and cost less than $10.00

Very interesting!
These metal jingles, are they rivets?
And how thick is the shell?
Thanks for sharing anyway, Geordie, I love projects like that.

The metal "jingles" are just typical bolts with a washer on the outside
and a nut on the inside.

The shell is pretty thin, it's just a typical 1 gallon metal paint can. I guess 1 mm or so?

AHa, thanks for the info.
Whoa, that must be a rather loud instrument.

Actually it is not too loud, the bolts don't move all that much, I suppose with longer screws.
It's right there with any other shaker instrument, and the strike on the bottom of the can is about
the same.

I would assume with nylock style nuts, left a little loose so the bolts can rattle?

That's it right there, nylock nuts, so they don't rattle loose, and of course the bolts are left loose.
The washers on the outside add something too. The holes are only a little larger than the nuts, so the action is
side to side and less up and down.
