Wow ! what a sound.

Only recently heard this drum after a link on another forum and was blown away with the sound. Excellent.

After much investigating, it turns out I got more chance of getting my hands on one as I have of winning the lottery. So, not to be put off I purchased the SonicCouture Kontakt sound library. Brilliant, although as with any kinda sampled percussion, playing it via midi is crap and you lose all the played real sound, which the samples just can't emulate.

Still, will enjoy adding some to my tracks .....

Yes, was considering a Hapi as a cheap alternative ...

Yea it's a real pain, that it's so difficul to get a hold of a hang....

It's a worthy pilgramage for such a fine insturment though eh?

I really want a hang drum but it would take a miracle to own one.

Beautiful sound....but nearly impossible to obtain, and in high demand.

Definitely not the real thing ....but...A cheap homemade substitute version for the moderately handy:

I think that's a high hat mechanism, shekere beads suspended from shock cord.
Good idea.

Seems like there is a world of homemade hang drum substitutes.

^ Still true I'm afraid. But there are now several other people who are now making their own versions based upon the Hang drum. Such as the: Caisa, Halo, Bell, and Spacedrum. I saw one for sale in a local music shop about 2 years ago.
I played it for at least half an hour, it was mesmerising and I was considering buying it on the spot until I checked the price: $2400 USD!

That is not a bad price. I purchase my "Double Seconds" Steel Pans back in 1992, Chromed and built in the US by Cliff Alexis for $850. It all depends on what sound you want to achieve. Steel Pans by Panyard can go for $4,000 to $8,000 a set but they have a root note with 4-5 harmonics. Myaset has a root note with 2-3 harmonics each.

I think the Steel Pan has more versitility than the Hang Drum but it is not hand played. The original steel drums from the 1950's were Convex but the Concave model proved to be more popular. I think these Pan builders could build these "Hang" drums.
